MORE than 20 Rangers fans were arrested in Germany yesterday after a wave of counterfeit euro currency appeared in Stuttgart.

About 4000 supporters of the Ibrox club were in the city for the Champions League match with VfB Stuttgart, which ended in a 1-0 win for the German side and Rangers' elimination from the competition.

A total of 30 arrests were made, with 26 people detained for using fake notes. At least five people were due to appear in court this morning while the others were released.

In separate incidents, two brothers were arrested for assaulting each other, one person was arrested for possession of drugs and one man was detained for public drunkenness.

By early evening, police confirmed that they had recovered about 100 fake 50-euro notes and that 26 Scots had been detained.

''We have no idea of the source of these forgeries,'' said Christiane Honer, a spokeswoman for Stuttgart police, ''but we started getting calls from restaurants and shops all over town that these fake notes were being passed by supporters.''
