TEAM Solent are now just one win away from lifting the Sydenhams Division One crown.

With two games to play, James Taylor’s top-of- the-class Students remain ten points clear at the summit.

Only Tadley Calleva and Cowes Sports can now overhaul them mathematically, but victory at Ringwood Town next Tuesday (April 7) would make the Southampton Solent University side untouchable.

Both main rivals will have played another two games by then, however, and any slip-ups could rule one, or both, out of contention come 4.45pm on Easter Monday.

Solent reeled off their fifth straight league victory on Saturday, triumphing 3-0 at US Portsmouth.

They couldn’t have asked for a better start, going ahead after 40 seconds when Jermal Frederick struck following Pip Nolan’s long throw.

Skipper Jesse Lassen doubled the advantage midway through the second half before midfield revelation Frederick bagged his second with around ten minutes to go.

“We controlled the game,” said Taylor. “Portsmouth never really looked like scoring, but they were defensively well organised on a difficult, windy day.

“We’ve got nothing now until Ringwood next Tuesday, which is handy because everyone’s gone home for Easter and we’ve got a few away on a university trip.”

As a former AFC Totton favourite, there have inevitably been rumours linking Taylor with the managerial vacancy at the Testwood Stadium.

But the ex-Eastleigh and Basingstoke targetman said: ““I’m happy doing what I’m doing with Team Solent and it’s all in place to carry on next year.”
