EASTLEIGH’S signing of serial scorer Jamie Cureton has raised a few eyebrows - because he is 41 years old.

But manager Ronnie Moore couldn’t care less what age he is as long as he keeps banging in the goals.

Striker Cureton comes with a sparkling CV of over 700 Football League appearances and 250 League goals.

And with Eastleigh's fourth striker Scott Wilson still struggling with a hamstring problem, the availability of the vastly experienced former Norwich, Bristol Rovers, Reading and QPR striker was too good to ignore.

After two seasons at Dagenham & Redbridge, Cureton dropped into the Southern League with north Hampshire outfit Farnborough last month, but it was merely a stop-gap arrangement while he looked for a professional contract elsewhere.

“People say 41, but it’s just a number,” said Moore. “He’s as fit as anyone and he’s a natural goalscorer.

“I like to have two strikers on the bench, but it’s in the lap of the gods when Scott (Wilson) will be fit and we’ve only had one striker if we needed to change things.

“Jamie will be an impact player. There may be games he’ll start and some he’ll come on for the last half-hour.

“He can be the difference between us winning games. His goals can take us where we want to be.

"I've not managed him before, but he's scored against us a few times."

Cureton is likely to be among the subs for Saturday’s Silverlake Stadium showdown with Paul Doswell's Sutton United.

“I don’t think he’ll start, he’s only just come in,” said Moore. “But never say never, he’s trained well and scored a few goals.”

Cureton himself envisages good things ahead for Eastleigh.

"It’s a club on the up with ambitions to get into the Football League and, with the squad and management team they have in place, it’s something I believe can happen this season," he said.
