LIAM Dawson and Brad Wheal return for Hampshire’s inaugural day-night Specsavers County Championship match, against Somerset at The Ageas Bowl tomorrow - but Mason Crane is unavailable.

Dawson will be back following England’s T20 series against South Africa, which concludes in Cardiff today, but Crane will be with the England Lions, who have a three-dayer against South Africa at Worcester from Thursday.

Crane was made available for the first two days, but Dawson is the only recognised spinner in Hampshire's 13-man squad with the day-night conditions unlikely to be spin-friendly.

Dawson is likely to partner Jimmy Adams at the top of the order with Michael Carberry dropped after reaching 20 once in his last eight innings.

Wheal has not played in the Championship since taking 11 wickets at 29.72 in Hampshire’s first three (unbeaten) games.

A back injury has limited him to just one first-team match since then, the first-class day-nighter against South Africa A two weeks ago.

In Crane's absence, Wheal may be Hampshire’s only bowler with experience of the pink ball in match conditions against Somerset.

He is likely to replace trialist Matt Salisbury, who struggled to contain Lancashire’s batsmen at Old Trafford.

Wheal would have played against Lancashire but his recent injury meant that was not a realistic option.

“Brad would have had his overs restricted against Lancashire because of the time since his injury but he comes back into our thinking for Somerset,” said director of cricket Giles White.

Reece Topley has been included in a 13-man squad but Fidel Edwards is unavailable due to “a lack of game time” so will be playing for the 2nd XI against Sussex at Horsham this week.
