Buses under attack mean services cancelled to estate
A BUS firm stopped services through a housing estate after young vandals pelted a single-decker with bricks and stones.
A Blue Star employee repairs one of the buses
The attack shattered a window on Blue Star’s number 18 service while several passengers were on board as it went through Millbrook in Southampton.
It is one of eight incidents in which buses have been targeted by youths in the area since Saturday, according to police. No one has been hurt.
Blue Star suspended its routes through Millbrook from 9pm to midnight on Monday. Now the company says it could withdraw its vehicles for longer if the vandalism continues.
Most of the incidents took place near Mansel Park. A number of First buses have also been targeted.
Blue Star operations manager Paul Coin took the decision to withdraw his firm’s buses for the safety of staff and passengers.
He said: “We know that by withdrawing a service we’re disadvantaging loyal customers, which is something we don’t want to do, but we have to put the safety of our drivers and customers first.
“We are monitoring it on a daily basis. We may take a view that we might have to withdraw for a lengthier period next time but the last thing we want to do is make Millbrook a no go area.”
The suspension of services has dismayed residents.
Chris Fox, 72, a retired company director, from Millbrook, said: “There are a lot of people who don’t have cars and are on benefits, so they rely on the buses to get into the city centre.”
A spokeswoman for First Hampshire & Dorset confirmed that the company had also had problems with anti social behaviour in Millbrook.
She said: “While relatively rare, incidents like these can be dangerous and if a member of the public were to be caught up in one – being hit by one of the objects thrown – it could cause significant injury.”
Both bus firms are working with the police to prevent further vandalism.
A Hampshire police spokesman said: “This seems to be mindless acts of vandalism by youths throwing stones or similar items at the buses and breaking windows, which sometimes then shatter.
“Not only does this put the passengers and driver in real danger from breaking glass and the distraction but it also means the buses have to be repaired. which takes them off the road. This can affect everyone who uses the bus service in Millbrook.
“We will be working with the bus companies to try and catch those responsible and would urge anyone with any information about who is carrying out the vandalism to contact us.”
Blue Star buses were running as usual yesterday.
Anyone with information should contact the Shirley Safer Neighbourhoods team on 101 or Crimestoppers an-onymously on 0800 555 111.

Still, hopefully it can serve to highlight the serious problems in areas of our community that are just round the corner. We've ghettoised and ignored areas of our town and hoped it'll all just go away. It won't. Until real money and real effort is expended.

.
It is up to the community to get their estate back inline and to safe condition so that the bus drivers feel confident with driving back into the area.
.
Meetings need to be held with the community, PCSO's and bus company. If they want their bus services back they will have to work for it, maybe volunteer as security for the bus route.

A solution was found, PCSO's joined the bus on entering the estate and and alighted when leaving then boarded the next bus, local residents identified offenders, arrests were made, although resources were better then (more police and youth workers) I think it may need the some of the same to sort this out.
Community cooperation is essential, local residents must know who these idiots are, although it is sometimes difficult to come forward to identify these mindless fools, locals need to stand together.

If there are a group of youths, or in this case 'mindless brats', who are just seen loitering, then all the police will do is move them on.
No arrests can be made unless these culprits are actually caught in doing something unlawful.

These are our communities. Those kids live on the estate, they hang around the parks.
Local people know who they are.
It is the responsibility of the parents to educate and monitor their own kids, it's not everyone else's job to do that for them.
Perhaps when there are no buses the parents will realise this although most simply don't care.

Let the residents of Millbrook walk if they treat the buses like this.

But it has been an on going problem with council estates in general. As a driver myself. Millbrook currently is a concern, but attacks in waves have taken place in Weston, Thornhill, Harefield, Shirley Warren, Townhill for over a decade.
There is no real punishment for the youths involved, when caught they often get nothing more than a slapped wrist. Neighbours are to scared of the gangs of youths involved, in case they become victims for reporting them.
Maybe as mentioned by others here, to bring back a punishment that befits the crime and deters them from doing I again. There is good cause to return the BIRCH and CANE to the statute books.
Allow the Police to have proper powers, it seems that the laws really have the POLICE in HANDCUFFS, rather than the little brats that caused the damage.

Lets step back in time 30 years ago, we had police officers living on the Millbrook hous est, at lest 4 to my knowledge, but because of the Thatcher policy of cut backs to public service, meant these police homes that came with the job was sold under there feet to private landlords, which in turn no more police living on the estates, the big disaventage to this was that local officers knew the parents and kids on the streets this was gone no longer there, also the closing down where young people use to go in the evenings, and now we got more cuts and even more no jobs for people and you expect things to be different I don't and I said 30 years ago this would happen and be on the increase.
Let you 2 be known I have done more than you 2 would on the streets and I do talk to people on the streets, I done more on the streets to help people than any Tory councillor as done in this ward and you can add to that a number of Labour councillors also

Suggest you show a lead. Ride the bus, and YOU get out and grab one, just to show us how it is done.
We will watch from the bus.
If this Tory-led government had not cut back on police funding, then maybe, just maybe, there would be a few police available to do the job for you.

Millbrook estate has at least two community officers walking the beat.
the Fire Station which isn't far from this will be the new Police Station but will it make a difference?
There have been changes to the 17 bus why?
In Coxford they blocked of an area & pelted buses .
East side of the city they were opening up the back of the bus & switching them off?
All sports fields have been wrecked by arseholes on motorbikes or scooters ripping up the pitches ask a copper to arrest them & they say they can't chase them why not?
It's a society that rewards law breakers & shirkers that's to blame not the Tories

The choice between not fingering them and letting the police know who they are is no bus service. It's Millbrook's choice.

Krays weren't around nor were the great train robbers when Maggie was in power were they?
The problem is the wishy washy Labour/Liberal rules bought in.
Get parents & the unemployed to do the jobs are Eastern Europeans seem to find quite easily, stop dole for teenagers maybe making them do the German solution & be conscripted in a junior Army might be the way?
But most of all start making it that for every action there's a reaction/punishment that will deter these idiots
