SATURDAY saw the Blues travel to face AC Pontymister but the game was postponed 30 minutes before kick off due to the prolonged heavy rain.

Both the home club and the referee gave it every chance for the game to go ahead but in the end the weather was the winner.

Last Tuesday evening, the Blues travelled to Newbridge to face fellow relegation rivals Pentwynmawr Athletic.

After both sides played out a 3-3 draw just a few weeks earlier at the Blues’ Memorial ground home, this was a must-win game for both sides.

The hosts started the livelier of the two sides and were unlucky not to take and early lead when Blues keeper Lee Jones made a number of good saves.

Dylan Mason fired wide for the Blues with just the keeper to beat. It wasn’t long before the Blues did take the lead when Mason fired home after a goalmouth scramble.

The Blues doubled their lead before half time when Matthew Burns fired home.

The second half was a dominant display from the Blues, playing some superb football and opening the home defence up at will.

The Blues soon found themselves three up when Mason got his second, before the 16-year-old completed his hat-trick with a 35 yard shot that left the home keeper stranded in the sand-covered box.

Burns was on the score sheet again soon when a great back heel by Mason opened up the home defence for Burns to coolly slot the ball home. The Blues made it 6-0 with an excellent 25 yard free kick from Craig Tanner which left the keeper with no chance. Six became seven when Mason again finished with ease when through on goal.

The home side managed to get two consolation goals from some slack Blues defending but the game was over as a contest as the Blues picked up a valuable three points thatmoves them eight points clear of bottom-placed Pentwynmawr.

Man of the match award went to Mason who scored four of the Blues’ seven goals.

This weekend, the Blues welcome Panteg to the Memorial Ground for a Torfaen derby with kick off at 3pm.

Last Wednesday saw the club’s third team progress to the final of the Benevolent Cup after a 3-1 win over Pontypool Town. The Blues scorers were Mike Marsden, Joe Prince and player manager Richard Gulliford. The third team are also through to the semi-finals of the Open Cup and the Ashbourne Givova UK Cup.
