BISCUITS baked by a small Hampshire company have been taken up by retail giant John Lewis Little Bee Bakery in Romsey scored a hit when they supplied the store chain with Hallowe’en skeleton biscuits last year and that has led to a regular order for their wedding favour biscuits.
Mum Melissa O’Dwyer started Little Bee six years ago soon after her son was born as a hobby and three years later it became a full time job.
She employs three full-time staff at her unit Abbey Park Industrial estate in where they bake cakes, biscuits and whoopie pies using natural ingredients from local producers, Melissa, who has experience in sales and marketing, cheekily emailed John Lewis after tasting their biscuits and saying she could make better.
John lewis took her up her offer and now Little Bees hand cut and hand iced biccies are available at john Lewis’s 46 UK stores and on line. The main problem Melissa and her team had to overcome was to extend the shelf-life of their products.
“They needed the biscuits to have a shelf-life of six months and we’ve done this by heat sealing the packets to make them airtight. We don’t use any preservatives,” explained Melissa.
