RETAILERS taking orders for the new Apple iPhone have sold out, citing "incredible demand'' ahead of the product's launch.
Carphone Warehouse, which has branches in Winchester, Southampton, Fareham, Gosport and Eastleigh, and network O2 have both stopped taking orders, telling disappointed customers to return for the High Street launch on Friday morning.
Undeterred by a £149 price tag and a minimum £45 a month commitment, Carphone Warehouse said orders for the new model had increased more than ten-fold compared to the original, which saw extensive queues outside shops in the region. O2's UK chief executive Ronan Dunne said: "We've never seen any mobile device create the excitement and demand of the iPhone 3G."
The updated version of the combined iPod, mobile phone and internet browser, called the iPhone 3G, features a high-speed Internet connection and GPS satellite positioning.
It also has BlackBerry-style email, which means messages are delivered to the device as soon as they are sent.
