Jackson death boosts HMV sales

SALES of Michael Jackson’s music have jumped 80 per cent in the wake of the singer’s death last week, entertainment group HMV revealed as it unveiled a jump in profits.

The group, which has six stores in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, said the collapse of Woolworths and rival Zavvi late last year had also helped boost performance in a “difficult” retail climate.

HMV’s pre-tax profits for the year to April 25 were 11.5 per cent ahead at £63m.

The group also owns Waterstone’s, which has 15 county branches, but the division suffered in a “challenging and highly competitive” book market.
