A recycling business has landed a three-year contract to handle waste wood in Hampshire.
Eco Sustainable Solutions will recycle waste wood delivered to the county’s network of household recycling centres.
The firm is expected to process 80,000 tonnes of waste wood annually from a new site at Southampton docks. About three-quarters will be shipped to fuel power stations in Sweden. The remaining 20,000 tonnes of cleaner wood will be used for animal bedding and as fuel for biomass power plants in the UK.
Eco was awarded the contract by Veolia Environ-mental Services, which has held the contract to manage all of Hampshire’s municipal waste since 1995.
The undisclosed deal will significantly increase the 150,000 tonnes of recyclable material that Christchurch headquartered Eco currently handles each year.
Eco will be working in partnership with Solent Stevedores.
The waste wood will be transported to Solent Stevedores’ purpose-built one acre bulks site near the old King George V dock at Southampton docks.
Four new jobs have been created with the opening of the new site, which operates 20 hours a day.
Eco’s commercial manager Peter Hardy said: “This is a significant expansion for Eco. It builds on the success of our existing partnership with Solent Stevedores, which has seen thousands of tonnes of waste wood diverted from landfill into more productive use, such as fuel and animal bedding.”
Eco, which was founded in 1994, employs 45 staff and has more than doubled its annual turnover in the last five years to around £8m.
