Year-long wait for Southampton Costco jobs

A FLAGSHIP cash and carry superstore bringing hundreds of jobs to Southampton won’t open for at least another 12 months, the Daily Echo can reveal.
It had originally been hoped a new Costco warehouse would be open in the city as soon as this summer, which council and business leaders had claimed would cement its position as the retail capital of the south coast.
But the low-cost wholesaler says it now believes it is unlikely it will open its giant 13,000-square metre outlet on part of the former BAT site in Millbrook until next spring.
The firm insists it remains fully committed to opening its 23rd warehouse in Southampton, and said the scheme is progressing to plan.
But confirmation it will almost certainly not open this year, as originally estimated, will come as a blow to jobhunters in the city.
The store was one of the planned developments for Southampton where council leader Royston Smith suggested the private sector could provide jobs for hundreds of council workers losing their posts in cost-cutting measures.
It comes as the national unemployment rate has this month hit a 16-year high of 8.4 per cent of the workforce.
When it opens, Costco will create 132 full-time and 117 part-time jobs, and the American retailer was backed during the planning process by Hampshire Chamber of Commerce because it was seen as a boost to the city economy.
Costco’s James Cheesemore said work is still being carried out by the landowners to clear the ten-acre plot, off Regents Park Road, after which building work should begin later this year.
He said: “We’re hoping to open in the spring next year.
“If we can do it earlier than spring we will – we’re still very much committed to the project.
“It was always going to be a long process and we’ve been progressing as quickly as possible.
“There’s been no delay.
“Once we’re on site it wouldn’t take us more than six months to build.”
Costco has argued its warehouse, which will open seven days a week, selling 4,000 different lines, will breathe life into the ten-acre site, which was used for cigarette manufacturing until BAT shut down production in 2007.
The firm has vowed to recruit locally for its positions at the store, and expects as many as 70 per cent of its employees to be under 35.

But could you tell me when in 2013 does the council keep all new business rates?
If in the right time frame it could bring in more money to the city instead of going to central governments pockets.
But I hope they take on locally born people not people who've just moved into the area people from Freshfield rd,Victory rd etc
Great news that CostCo are going ahead, I hope that they are looking at road access and traffic management though :)

the buyer has decided to have it built & ready to move into next year.

As I was bought up in Freshfield rd & lived there until I was about 22 & since then I've lived in several houses in that area totalling 30years I guess I could say NO your not a local but that would be resorting to your level.
The article says many jobs will go to local teenagers so does that make Costco out to be wrong?
I know there are quite a few Eastern Europeans who have lived there for a few years many already working I also know there are many locally born & bred youngsters out of work in that area.
I feel those already unemployed & who already live in the area should be given first go at applying for the jobs.
If you don't believe this then please say so next time you have all the residents together to fight the Bio Mass generator & then we'll see exactly what they think of you?
I honestly believe it should be done on how long you've lived in the area & not how quickly you could live in the area so sorry if you don't agree with me but I thought you were all about looking after the welfare of the people in your area or is it only when it benefits you?

the manager/owner wanted to change his bar/restaurant into a top end steak & fish restaurant.
He interviewed & took on a guy from the Job centre, this guy was British,
his waitress bar manager was Polish( is) she had given the job to an eastern European she didn't say Polish or Russian but she was crying as she might have to tell them they didn't have the job & they needed the money to send home she actually said that the British don't need the work as they get paid any way?
A Tomato grower on the island has a Polish manager & he/she only recruits Eastern Europeans yet the Island is a unemployment blackspot?
I have nothing against them & I know that the figures show that at least 1 million on the dole queue wouldn't work no matter what but we should & Ian Duncan has started to make it so they have to work.
if we have almost full employment & we have jobs available fine if not it should go to locally born ( British) workers/people & don't tell me that wouldn't be the case in the eastern european countries

they found a loophole where they couldn't claim social or get a council house for at least three years but there is a law that states the local council can't leave a mother & child homeless & we have to support them & that was the loophole

Not sure about the biting you - that'd would be mighty unsanitary. Again I've been here too long, my teeth are probably rotten from lager and macdonalds - see, I'm integrating into the local society :D Soon, I won't be able to pull my leggings over my belly and can waddle down the dole office I think I'll fit in just perfectly. Maybe I'll get pregnant too and get the council to give me a £1m mansion. I might get all the family over too to come live here with me.

Maybe that makes me racist as I hate bigoted English people....?
All I am saying is that we can see what is going on with the "internationals
" as soon as they get off the "Ryanair" at Bournemouth they are pregnant (INSTANT BRITISH CITIZENSHIP I GUESS FOR THE NEW BRAT!) ............alot of People come over here just for a hand out & "THAT" my friend is my point of view, you can't deny it cause it's true & you know it!!....I don't care what you think, I am allowed to speak my mind "apparently" so I shall cause I am overweight with rotten teeth & I am indeed ugly as sin:)
Maybe I just don't like anybody & you can just bite me & call me a facist :P
I live in town & I am sick of the cr@p that the people in the Bevois Valley Jungle leave in the streets (beds, washing machines, used Johnny bags etc...) & if you don't like what I said then BITE ME again...I really don't care :P
Oh well, I guess "Souljackers" account may well be cancelled after this...night night & sweet dreams, bwahahaha ;)

Not sure about the biting you - that'd would be mighty unsanitary. Again I've been here too long, my teeth are probably rotten from lager and macdonalds - see, I'm integrating into the local society :D Soon, I won't be able to pull my leggings over my belly and can waddle down the dole office I think I'll fit in just perfectly. Maybe I'll get pregnant too and get the council to give me a £1m mansion. I might get all the family over too to come live here with me.
And Loosehead- no I've never seen that telly show.

Like I said, I live in town & it used to be old lady's cleaning their front paths with pride...not no more.....people pi$$ing in other peoples doorways....sh1t in the street & all other manner of other unmentionables I don't care to mention...I stopped somebody being kneecapped the other day by "internationals & they were doing it to another "International" too......it all changed over here when Tony Bliar let the borders open to everybody :)
My kid goes to school in Bevois Valley & he is in such a minority now as are all the schools round here.....it is not right.......the foreign kids get extra attention & the indigenous kids get bypassed.....IT AIN'T RIGHT :D

But could you tell me when in 2013 does the council keep all new business rates?
If in the right time frame it could bring in more money to the city instead of going to central governments pockets.
But I hope they take on locally born people not people who've just moved into the area people from Freshfield rd,Victory rd etc
