500 British Gas staff to lose their jobs

More than 500 British Gas workers in Southampton face redundancy after bosses announced they will be shutting the city's call centre.

Workers were gathered this morning to be told the news that the centre in St Mary's Road will be closed by the end of the year as part of a cost cutting review.

Around 600 people work at the British Gas operation at Dorset House including 550 people in the call centre that handles enquiries from across the country.

A 90-day consultation period on job losses has been launched.

British Gas said it was dealing with more customers through digital channels and needed to reduce costs to remain competitive and offer best prices.

In a statement the firm said: “We have therefore reviewed resource levels in our energy business, and are now proposing to close our Southampton contact centre at the end of 2012 leading to a reduction of 550 roles.

“If the proposals go ahead 50 customer services roles currently sited at Southampton may transfer to our site at Chandlers Ford.

“We will work to ensure continued high levels of service for our customers as we now move into a consultation period to discuss these proposals in more detail with our people and their representatives.”

British Gas said profits from supplying gas and electricity to residential homes fell 30 per cent last year to £522million – around £52 per household – due to a mild spring an autumn.

British Gas hiked electricity and gas prices by 16 and 18 per cent rise in August although has since cut electricity prices by five per cent.

Council leader Royston Smith said: “Southampton City Council will do everything it can to support British Gas staff at this very difficult time.

"Helping our residents into employment is a top priority for the city, and we are already pulling together a taskforce of council officers with employment and skills expertise and partners including JobCentre Plus and other agencies to respond to today’s news.”

City MP John Denham said: “This is bad news for Southampton. I am deeply disappointed at the loss of so many longstanding jobs.

"This will undoubtedly have an impact in and around Southampton, and I very much hope all those who are facing redundancy are given the support they need from British Gas.”

This is to be expected really, when you only make £522 million I suppose you have to make cuts, I mean that would barely cover the cost of a weekly shop these days.

I suppose these jobs are going offshore like so many others, how long before thay come back due to complete lack of customer service? By which time 500 families lives have been turned upside down all for the sake of bit of a saving.

Totally agree Bigfella £522k is such a pathetic profit I don't know how they can keep the business going ! Phil Bentley should be ashamed.

Jobs wont go offshore, just up north where rents are cheaper.

The redundancies also make financial sense in other ways.

The vast majority of employees are on old style pensions

If you employ someone on call centre starter wage you are looking at 13k per year.

Staff that have been there a while are likely to be on just under £20k

British Gas have probably made about 200 to 300 people redundant a year for the last 5 or so years. It only makes the news because of the big hit in one place.

Good business practice, if not slightly bending redundancy Law

A spokesman said today:

"Customers need not fear that their quality of service will be diminished in any way. Hastily trained recruits in our offshore sites are already preparing to make mistakes on your bills and mispronounce your names at you.

Alternatively, you now have the option of going on-line to make a mess of your account with no help at all from ourselves, and when you finally give up and call for assistance, you can call for assistance only to be left pressing buttons and listening to hold music (Blur should be turning in their graves, if they had one).

To our loyal staff, many who have worked at the site for many years, well, y'know, whatever. We feel your pain, but fortunately in a hypothetical, rather than a financial and actual, sense. Now, pass the Chablis."

I don't see what old style pensions have do do with it unless you are over 60.
As for jobs not going offshore, watch this space. When all the fuss has died down they will quietly shunt them off to India or
somewhere else in the southern hemisphere.

@bgstaff – Verry sorry if you misunderstood, I have the deapest sympathy for your position.

I wasn't saying what they are doing is in anyway right. On the contrary the one thing that redundancy cannot legally be used for is making MORE money.

If BG were running at a loss then arguably it would be a good reason to cut 550 but as a previous poster has mentioned they are expanding elsewhere.

Personally I think that BG systematically abuses the redundancy process to reduced their overhead and increase profit.

I would like to see a public enquiry that investigates the number of people they make redundant every year against the amount they employ.

I am a very bitter ex-employee who was made redundant two years ago as part of a group of 300. It was the 5th redundancy procedure that I went through in 4 years

Privatisation of all of our utilities has led us down the path of destruction, we are now ripped off at every opportunity kicked from pillar to post in an effort to reduce costs, all of these companies have done away with what used to be known as customer loyalty by offering incentives to new customers and the only winners are the big bosses. I am sorry about the loss of jobs but if my experience of dealing with B.G is anything to go by then it comes as no surprise, and you say that what happened years ago is irrelevant, that only reinforces my original opinion of my dealings with B.G. i would get more sense out of a loaf of Hovis.(thick sliced)

I have said for a long time now that if people - businesses want me to pay their bill then they need to send me a written invoice. My paying for an internet connection is solely for my own benefit, not to reduce corporate business expenses. And i am certainly not going to allow them access to the internet connection. Certainly i will pay my bills by internet via my bank, but that is MY choice! As for laying off 500 employees then there is a very good reason to change gas companies even maybe change to electric. These corporate businesses need a shock lessen on customer relations and good business practices.

But if you live in spain or indian you faced with the same problem. how do i feed myself and my family. Also in spain and indian like many other counties around the world they have business people that don't care who is earning them money, only that they keep earning.
Don't know if anybody has noticed but the me,me,me culture is growing. like i said at the begining we are all to blame. Just shows how unsophisticated we are when we fight over scraps while our peers languish in luxury.

I have ended up buying from a company called OVO. Their customer service is great and based in the UK (It's either up north or in scotland, I can't remember). They weren't the cheapest but cheaper than BG!!

I'd say to anyone who is unhappy with BG then vote with your feet! Use a comparison site and take your business elsewhere!

If you look back in to the sixties and seventies you'll find that free milk was taken off the older children by a Labour Administration and the Conservatives stopped it for everyone.

You are correct. Free school milk for Secondary School pupils was stopped in 1968 when Harold Wilson was Prime Minister. The reason given was that it was during a child's earlier years that the calcium in milk helped to build up stronger bones.

Margaret Thatcher obviously thought it better to save money than it was to ensure a healthier future for the kids and stopped free school milk for all children on 15 June 1871.

Where does all this buy British come from, where has it stated that they will move the call centre abroad. The call centre in South Africa has been there for years I believe.

As someone said why pay someone around £20000pa when with the lease expiring on the building you can close it, lay off the staff and then in a year or so open the new Centrica/British Gas call centre/office that is being built in Oxford. The new staff they then take on will start on wages of about £13000pa.

Of course I am just assuming and could be wrong but they echo ran a story two years ago that this place would lose in the future.

I thought they had recently had a recruitment drive. This is not good news for Southampton.
Indeed, I went for an interview there for my usual line of work (Data Analyst) last June, fortunately (in hindsight) I didn't get the job.

My condolences go out to those whose lives will be affected by this - was made redundant from Capita three years ago, which effectively ended the relationship I was in at the time.

Many of these comments seem to be from the clueless who read the Daily Mail: misinformed, misguided and mistaken. BG makes 5% profit which IS reasonable and less than Tesco, Sky, Imperial Tobacco, Heineken, Shell, Barclays, etc etc. squeeze the margin and you have to squeeze the costs - of the 6 largest economies in Europe UK domestic energy prices are the lowest. please read an informed source before you write! I feel sorry for those being made redundant and your rants simply inflame an already painful situation.

Strange as it may seem, the word cholesterol was unknown to the general public at that time, and was certainly not something that we were warned about.

What was known, and still holds true is that milk in the early years does provide calcium to build strong bones.

It is calcium tablets that are given to the elderly to combat osteoperosis, which is weakness and brittleness in bones.

Maybe not known by the general public but certainly known by the health professionals.

The countries with the highest incidence of osteoporosis are also the countries with the highest per capita intake of milk and dairy products. Osteoporosis is a rare disease amongst the lactose intolerant majority of the world’s population.

The fat in milk actually leaches more calcium from the bones than the body absorbs from milk.

something that happened years ago is irrelevant, we work our all in that office

I accept your point about the milk, but you are wrong about Thatcher she is at the root of all that is wrong in our country today. She sold of the crown jewels of our country that we the public owned including B.G.and what she didn't sell she closed down, she gave away our housing stock and transferred people from job seekers to incapacity benefit to make the jobless figures look better, the list of her destructiveness is endless and we will suffer the consequences for many years to come.If i remember right it was Thatcher who said that north sea gas wouldn't make gas any cheaper but it wouldn't go up in price, and that useless Cameron is the son of Thatcher when it comes to stupidity, so the loss of jobs at B.G. can be traced right back to Thatcher.

I haven't used British Gas as a supplier since I left them and never will. I'm currently giving Co-op Energy a try.

You are correct. Free school milk for Secondary School pupils was stopped in 1968 when Harold Wilson was Prime Minister. The reason given was that it was during a child's earlier years that the calcium in milk helped to build up stronger bones. Margaret Thatcher obviously thought it better to save money than it was to ensure a healthier future for the kids and stopped free school milk for all children on 15 June 1871.
.. good on Wilson and Thatcher I say. At least the old bat did something right - if for the wrong reasons. A cholesterol and saturated fat clogged drink that has been 'designed' by evolution to meet the needs of young calves. Healthy and just right for them - not at all healthy for us.
Perhaps the parents ought to consider buying milk for their children's development and forgo the cigarettes, bingo and lottery tickets?
idiots
What is wrong with you? People are frightened for their futures and how they will support their families and all you can go on about is Maggie Thatcher and milk. Have some thought for others before you rant on about irrelevances. Morons!!
She sold them as labour and the unions were shqfting the whole country. If you're gonna start saying stuff like that take the rose tinted glasses off and look at both the major partis, and the lib losers. They have all had their part to play in this countries slow demise... It's not just thatcher but wilson, major, blair, brown and cameron...

I think you are the one that does not understand what British means. Northern Ireland is not part of Britain, so is not British. It is part of the United Kingdom
funny that? my history lesson taught me that the Romans came here & called these islands Grand Brittania ( Ireland as well) the people were known as Britons & to us as Ancient Britons.the one race that could with all honesty say they're not British are the English race are name was originally Ingly in gaelic which I think means foreigner & the Brits who lived in this part of Ancient Briton went & founded Brittany so no matter how much modern day Irish people or Welsh & scots say they're separate races they are the Britons we are the English try looking at your history book under the Roman occupation
I think you need educating, Here you are a link for the simplistic.

Actually I was top of my class at Roman/Ancient Briton History & I don't look at it from a Irish NAtionalistic point of view.
Ask the Welsh Gaelic people exactly where the name English came from & what it means then you'll see the only non Britons are the English.
it's rather funny when you come to think of how the celtic nations all refer to the English as the British !
Who & what was Bodicea? who were the Icini?
