Ford staff in 24-hour strike

Ford staff in 24-hour strike
STAFF at Southampton’s Ford plant today staging a 24-hour strike in a row over pay and pensions.
The Unite union said that the walkout, the first at the car giant since the 1970s, would affect sites across the country including Southampton, Dagenham in Essex, Bridgend in South Wales, and Halewood on Merseyside.
The union, which represents about 1,200 white collar employees at the car maker, said that staff were “furious” at plans to close the final salary pension scheme to new starters and lower their rates of pay.
The dispute is understood to involve dozens of the 600 staff at Ford’s Southampton assembly plant in Swaythling, which makes about 28,000 Ford Transit vans a year.
Unite said 60 workers were taking industrial action in Southampton.
Production workers are not involved in the dispute.
Unite national officer Roger Maddison said: “Our staff members will not stand by and allow Ford to create a two-tier workforce on pay and pensions.
“To date Ford has failed to make any genuine attempts to resolve this dispute.
“We fiercely oppose the closure of Ford’s final salary scheme to new entrants because we believe ultimately Ford will try to close the entire scheme.
“Ford must prove that it is committed to the UK by investing in its UK workforce.
“The UK has the best sales in Europe, there’s no excuse to attack the terms and conditions of a new generation of Ford staff.
“The company is also refusing to back away from creating a two-tier workforce by making new starters work for less money for doing the same job as existing staff. This is totally unacceptable.”
A Ford spokesman said: “The issue giving rise to the industrial action relates to a disagreement between the company and a particular group of its employees in relation to their ongoing pay and benefit negotiations.
“Ford remains willing and available to continue discussions with the union representing these workers.
“The vast majority of the company’s employees are not involved in this disagreement, or the decision to take industrial action.”
Company bosses insist there is still a bright future for the Swaythling plant – despite news that the latest version of the iconic Ford Transit van will not be built in Southampton, but in Turkey.
Production of the Transit van is expected to finish in Southampton next year and millions of pounds of investment will instead be ploughed into the plant to make it a global centre for all the new Transit chassis cab models.
About half the workforce – some 500 jobs – were culled at the Swaythling factory three years ago.
Workers who remained were also hit by wage freezes as the company searched for ways to cut costs.

Companys can work with out bosses and share holders, but they can not work with out the worker, its the workers that make the money for any company.
So yes they do need to grow a back bone and fight for every thing that is right to do.
When I work for Companys on contracts like out in the refinery, we had a back bone in those days and we had a number of fights with the bosses and we won alot of ground, now look at them no back bone in them and they lost every thing that we gained.

All these big brave words but it would be a different story if Ford decided to shut Southampton and even worse if it decided to pull out of the U.K. You are not going to tell me these strikers are prepared to put their jobs on the line for people that haven't even started working for Ford, of course Ford will close the final salary pension scheme the same as every other company has/will they are no longer affordable for any company. There are 3 different types of union members first you have the militants with their deluded ideas of people power, then you have the ones that go to the meetings but are not bright enough to make their own decisions and worst of all are the ones that just do as they are told, so at the end of the day you have the militants and a load of sheep. And if all those sheep keep pushing Ford then they will finish up with plenty of time for grazing and i for one would not blame Ford.
The world is changing people all over the world are fed up with big companys black mailing its workers and there countrys.

The same crud bleated by everyone who hasn't the faintest clue how commerce functions. Companies cannot work without shareholders, because without shareholders companies wouldn't exist in the first place. As for "bosses" I'm not even sure what you mean by that. If you mean there is usually a layer of management in a company that is not technically needed, then yes, I fully agree. If you mean anyone who isn't directly involved with production is worthless, then I don't agree at all.
The whole "if you're not on the shop floor, you're scum and we don't need you" attitude is a sign of true short-sightedness.
Personally, I'm beginning to think the concept of employment itself is a waste of time. Employees tend to forget - and modern management practices help them do it - that they're ultimately there to do work, but instead spend an inordinate amount of time trying to screw the system, worrying about their 'rights', and basically treating the people paying their wages with utter contempt.

Yes, I'm sure you'd love to renationalise all the services again so your 'brothers' can run them into the ground, all the while those in the higher hierarchy of the Unions count all the surplus money coming in.

Lucky? What's luck got to do with it? I weighed up the options: I could gripe and moan and fight to keep my current job, or I could be pragmatic and direct my energies at finding another one. This option is open to everyone. I sympathise to a point, but eventually people have to realise, nobody owes you a thing in this life.

Which leads one to wonder why they don't form their own company, and create jobs for themselves? After all, the workers are all that matter in a company, right? No need for directors, or management, or startup capital or anything. Just workers.

Do I hear the bands playing and see the banners waiving as the Union leads another group of workers into job oblivion !!!
You need to grow a back bone, and stop being a bline slave sheep to the system
Companys can work with out bosses and share holders, but they can not work with out the worker, its the workers that make the money for any company.
So yes they do need to grow a back bone and fight for every thing that is right to do.
When I work for Companys on contracts like out in the refinery, we had a back bone in those days and we had a number of fights with the bosses and we won alot of ground, now look at them no back bone in them and they lost every thing that we gained.

Millions upon millions of pounds which most union leaders keep on pouring into the coffers of right wing mobsters led by closet conservative Milliband can be used for starting co-operatives.
Workers also need to learn that those cooperatives when successful will have capitalist vultures circuling over them. Workers should not fall for greed when sharks start offering high prices for their shares. Otherwise if they copy what workers of City Bus did in Southampton they will suffer similar fate and regret for having sold their job security and work conditions.
Economic model of multinational companies was bound to and has failed. Not only us in UK but everywhere alternative approach to life style and modes of employment is required. But how can we eliminate greed and ego from minds of human race, which over the years have become addicted to these moral poisons?
Mahatma Gandhi tried to cure that human disease, but British establishment kept on beating the hell out of him or kept locking him up and ultra right winger Indian puppets of 'the Raj' shot him dead

Co-ops would work and work a lot better than any company with bosses, they are not needed nore are share holders, It just a shame those with money will not leaned to start up a Co-op in its true nature.
It the same reason why they will not let the Post Office run its own bank.

some fitters went over to install it.
the lorry pulled up the fitters expected a heavy lifting fork truck what they got was loads of men lifting it off the truck.
One hurt his shoulder he lost his job but the machinery was offloaded.
I would never accept those conditions.
Permanent Ford office workers aren't being touched it's only new employees & they don't have to accept the job do they?
