Hampshire Yeoman pub in Blackfield to become a Sainsbury's store
3:01pm Monday 24th September 2012 in Business
By Chris Yandell, Chief Reporter, New Forest
The Hampshire Yeoman pub landlord Richard Clark.
A VILLAGE pub is set to close and re-open as a convenience store in a move that will create up to 25 jobs.
Blackfield will lose its only watering hole if planning chiefs call time on the Hampshire Yeoman and approve plans to convert the 60-year-old building into a Sainsbury’s Local.
Parish councillors are backing the scheme, which has sparked mixed views in the area.
One of the letters received by New Forest District Council says: “Anything would be better than the eyesore that is the Hampshire Yeoman.
“I’ve lived near the pub since 1996 and it has gradually got worse. The excessive noise from discos going on until past midnight, and the drunken shouting and abusive language at chucking out time, is terrible.
“People say a pub is the heart of a village. If that is the case, Blackfield needs a transplant.”
But the council has also received a letter from a villager who is strongly against plans to turn the building into a convenience store.
The letter says: “The Hampshire Yeoman plays an important role in village life. If a supermarket replaced the pub it would be the end of many people’s social life.”
Landlord Richard Clark, 50, added: “If the Hampshire Yeoman closes I’ll be homeless as well as unemployed.
“I’ve lived in Blackfield all my life and don’t want to see it go – it holds too many memories. It’s the busiest pub in the area and the only one in the village itself. We don’t have any more trouble than any other pub.”
The Hampshire Yeoman is owned by Punch Taverns.
A spokesman said: “It’s always our preference that our pubs continue to trade as pubs.
However, we review our estate regularly and explore other options around the future of our less sustainable sites.
“Following such a review a decision has been made to put the Hampshire Yeoman on the market and we’re currently speaking to interested parties.”
A Sainsbury’s spokesman said the proposed new shop would open next spring if plans to extend the building were approved.
She added: “We believe the new shop will provide a fresh and convenient alternative for local residents looking to top up their food shopping in the area.”

Punch Taverns get real how much did you get offered for this site?
If the council are correct this place was humming so you must be making a profit so you want to keep pubs as pubs?
Liars give me the money

Punch Taverns haven't even got the backbone to try and renovate the pub first before selling it on.
We had the same issue a few years ago with the Arena/Waterside/Spla
shes in Hythe - a pub with a slightly less than perfect reputation being used as a cash cow rather than the focal point of a community.
A sad day if it does get closed down.

If a community can think of nothing better to do than intoxicate themselves then they are quite frankly sick.
The sooner this Victorian tradition of public houses dies out the better.

How can an establishment that sells intoxicating liquor to people possibly be the heart of a community?

You have a Tesco Direct, next door. Post Office over the road, Chemist, Garage selling food etc and a Coop up the road. Blackfield really does not need another Mini market type shop. I live there and i really don't understand this, the catchment area is not that great to warrant it.
I am indifferent about the pub closing, i must say most of the chavs in Heather Road will be disappointed.

There you are, all explained.

I see where you are coming from, no matter how greedy they are, they dont venture in to building stores at a lose, just so no one else can. The market has been captured in the area by tesco and the coop, sainsburys are to late.

I used to live right by this pub and it was a nightmare. Rowdy noisy drunk people at closing time 2 or 3 times each week. We'd have people urinating in our front garden regularly during those times too. I doubt the new residents at my old house will have the same problem from the Sainsburys customers.
The manager of sainsbury's in Lordshill blamed the Mountbatten pub for the young getting hold of drinks.
the landlady pointed out that the pub didn't sell the brand of Alcohol that they were drinking & the Supermarket did.
as for drunks being loud ( what time?)
there's a law against that & urinating in the streets or your gardens so exactly where were the police?
if this was such a bad place the police would have opposed the liquor licence & there would be no pub any way.
I get annoyed when people move next to a pub & then complain & try to get it shut why move there?
Surely talk to the landlord & the police & try to stop it happening would be better.
once the pub goes that's it but you will still have a problem.
a pub sells pints & how many adults would need to take out 24 pints to the local yobs or kids?
yet it would only take one idiotic adult to take out several cases of lager so how's the drunkenness going to get better?

Where ever you find a supermarket style shop you find under age drinkers ( to mask the drugs).
at least with the pubs raids can happen & landlords prosecuted

Minors who look older than they are buy alcohol in supermarkets.
Adults ( if you can call them that) buy alcohol for minors.
In a pub a landlord or bar staff can be prosecuted for selling to a minor.
If an adult is caught buying for a minor in a pub he can be rejected from the establishment.
All Landlords Bar Staff have the right to refuse to serve you if they believe you've had enough.
most Supermarkets don't see you drinking alcohol in store do they so they have no clue who's going to drink it have they?
So they have absolutely no responsibility do they?
Then we get idiots calling for the price to rise which shuts even the responsible pubs yet the supermarkets can continue to offer knock down alcohol to any one who looks old enough

If Sainsbury keep the picnic tables outside folk can still sit around drinking, it will just cost a lot less.
