HOW times change quickly – last Sunday it was all about Mother’s Day, treating mums for the day, breakfast in bed, a nice lunch out perhaps but certainly a day of pampering.
Now mums are in the firing line of the insurance industry and being branded as the biggest offenders when it comes to fronting – insurance fraud.
It seems mums are regularly insuring cars for their children. No problem there but what they are doing is adding the child as the second named driver even if they are the main driver of that vehicle – something known as fronting.
Of course it’s all about saving money and with insurance premiums notoriously high for young drivers it’s understandable that mums, and dads, will do everything possible to save on costs.
A price comparison website says one in ten motoring families have committed this crime and a further 30 per cent would consider fronting to save money.
Steve Sweeney, the website’s head of car insurance, said: “It is staggering to see just how many people are happy to take the risk and ‘front’ on their car insurance; it is illegal and will immediately be classified as fraud by an insurer.
Those considering lying to save money are playing a very risky game.
“A motorist claiming to be the main driver when they are not is a dangerous move. It may save you money in the short term on your premiums, but if caught your insurance will be invalidated and a younger driver could face court – for driving without insurance.”
