Foundry boss: Statue will almost certainly come down
The controversial statue
The controversial statue

THE manager of the London-based foundry which completed the Ted Bates statue only last week has admitted the controversial monument will almost certainly be taken down.

Sue Rolfe, manager of the Bronze Age Sculpture Casting Foundry, spoke yesterday to Saints about what options are open to them in the wake of the negative publicity over the £112,000 statue.

"We've heard the statue hasn't been well received, which is a really unfortunate thing to happen," she told the Echo.

"I feel deeply for the club and the artist but we just cast what has been carved".

Full interview in today's Daily Echo.

Today(monday)i went to see Ted Bates statue and i was horrified to see the biggest insult to Ted Bates, this man is an icon and much loved and respected by all the fans, supports and staff at southampton Football Club and it's even bigger insult to his family.
It should be removed a.s.a.p.and melted down and the sculptor should give back the money got for this obnoxious, disgraceful, disgusting excuse for a statue.
The sculptor Iann Brennan( sculptor you must be joking ) does he specialize in sculptuing freaks? because that's what he has made Ted Bates look like,so plaese, plaese, please pull it down and destroy it

Yes, take it down and start again, but why was this not spotted on the preview meetings. With the Saints season almost in tatters this is the last thing we true Saint fans wanted.

went down to the stadium last night & thought the statue looked like shrek in a suit & not a good fitting one!! melt it down & turn it into golf clubs you could get a few sets out of the head on it,s own!!! get some one else to do it!! dont let Brennan any where near it... the big question is has he been paid??? I had a commissioned painting done but paid for it on delivery when i was happy with it!

As I expected we are now a laughing stock because of this statue, look at the pompey scum taking the p!!! now. Well done the Saints Trust, Brennan was you paid by Pompey to make this??? Take it down and get it done properly ASAP, we want to be proud of Saints and of Ted Bates (The Great Man Himself).

It should be removed straight away , but all is not lost as it can placed in Winchester art college and used as a very good example what can happen when this go wrong !

Good to see that Saints have bowed under the pressure and can now see that PORTSMOUTH FC is the only 'proper' team in Hampshire by having a statue of teh great MIlAN MANDARIC outside St Fairies! LOL @ S*umhampton!

I feel really sorry for Mr Bates' family and Saints fans - and I loath football.
But there's another point to this. The statue is an insult to artists and sculptors and must be taken down to preserve their professional integrity. From research, I gather the sculptor is a highly regarded artist, producing both woodcarvings and bronzes. However, he seems to have done very little work with the human form. Yes, it may well be based on a caricature of Mr Bates, but if so, Mr Brennan has made a big mistake. Cartoons are, by their very nature, transient, pen and ink renditions of a person. A sculpture has an essentially permanent quality and is totally unsuitable for this interpretation.
Not many craftsmen would admit to a lack of experience and turn down a commission. So, as has been suggested, I believe the fault lies with those who commissioned the work and let it get that far.

How can you possibly get his head so out of proportion and his arms and hands look like ET's.
Feel very sorry for the family and all concerned.

£112,000...I doubt dear old Ted ever made that much money in his career.

This is what the sculptor himself said just prior to the unveiling:
"We were breaking new ground because the foundry had never done it quite like that before and I certainly had n't. At the back of mind was always the worry that the different parts wouldn't fit." - Ops

"The jacket and trousers went to the foundry in October, but the head didn't go on his shoulders until late February. If any thing had gone wrong we would have been put six weeks behind, but fortunately it all fitted." - Did it???

I feel sorry for him, he's a Saints fan and has made em a laughing stock...

I think the sculptor may have inadvertantly mixed up the dimensions of Ted Bates with those of Elasto Girl from the Incredibles
Posted by: Stu Haynes, Whiteley on 8:30pm Tue 20 Mar 07
I went down down to see the statue today. I agree, that from the back the proportions appear incorrect, but actually I couldn't get too upset with the overall image. Ted's family obviously think it's good enough, or at least satisfactory, so I don't know why everyone else is getting wound up about it.

Yes, I know Ted's legacy to the club is outstanding, but the lengthy diatribes posted on here will only fuel the media storm that will then add to the general derision. I would much rather the club focused on winning the remaining 7 games to get us back in the league where we should properly be playing.

I don't know what's more pathetic here really - the statue or the moronic comments being left on here by some rather dim people from Portsmouth and Edinburgh.

It looks stupid, and it's a shame that somebody who gave so much to Southampton FC has been reduced to a bronze replica of a prematurely-aged schoolboy. I think begging for sympathy on the internet like some of us are doing is a bit silly, as the only kind of Portsmouth fan you're going to get on here are clearly the garden-variety morons that give their club such a bad reputation for hooliganism in the first place. Let's just settle on giving the club a strong, unified message...

TAKE THE STATUE DOWN.

•••••• MESSAGE FROM THE SOUTHAMPTON BOARD ••••••

Due to the recent poor turn out against Burnley, the half time pie and scratch card receipts took a nose dive thus rendering the final payment for Ted Bates statue well below the agreed price.

Short cuts had to be made!

Having already cast the head, football and right arm, the expensive model we had employed had to be released. Fortunately Jimmy Krankie had fallen out of favour at the Orchard Theatre in Dartford and he became available for lower torso modelling at the eleventh hour.

This is disgraceful!

As an avid ITV viewer of the late 70's I can honestly say that this statue looks nothing like Ted Rodgers, however seeing those big meaty hands brought back wonderful memories of the old 3-2-1 wave.

And why didn't Dusty Bin get a mention? Without him Rodgers was nothing!

I admit the suit looks good.

Subject: THAT STATUE.

It has to be said that the "Ted Bates Trust" comments - regarding the bloody awful "Toulouse Le Ted" statue insult to the "great Ted Bates" are far from satisfactory.

The so called chairman - Dave Ford needs to come down off his own particular podium - judging by his espousing.

Firstly he states quite clearly in previous quotes .... "I saw the statue a week ago it's awesome" etc and then appears - if the Echo (20.3.07) is to be believed to be changing tack. A spokesperson who must either be him or Janet Formby - for no others were mentioned - now say that the trust (WHO HAVE COMPLETELY FAILED TO MONITOR THE PROJECT PROPERLY in its various stages) were mislead by some pictures they saw. Mind you the particular picture now referred to, appears to have only been of a statue head.

Quite frankly Mr Ford - who has been known to champion his own credibility as a permanent fixture in the SAINTS contingent home and away and who apparently doesn't have much time for those of us who can only afford the home games - except for the occasional special away-day treat - has made himself look a complete chump who SHOULD do what most others in any form of public life do after the excrement hits the fan - and resign his current "Trust" position. Because you could drive an early sixties "Pompey Trolley Bus" through his totally flawed arguments.

There are plenty of others - thousands in fact - that care deeply for OUR (that means all of us) team. You could be forgiven for thinking, that these days, the various Trusts - OR the loyal band that regularly follow Saints away (bless 'em) were some kind of elite. In fact they are just "people" that decide for themselves that they want to travel country-wide EVERY weekend or midweek in support of their team and obviously either have the revenue to be able to do so - or choose to spend their hard earned (one assumes) cash that way. Others like myself will mostly - when Saints are away, attend non league - or alternatively work weekends at "local pitches" and sporting facilities. I also spent two solid years of my life writing my own published work of my life following Saints. The precious memories that Ted's sides gave me -the brilliance of traditional wingers Paine & Sydenham working in tandem for example - was outstanding - something that will never leave me.

In fact tandem is what needs to happen now to rectify this god awful mess. People - just for once - need to leave their egos behind -forget their petty squabbles with other, now marginalised Saints groups - (or just plain individuals like me) and act positively. Substitute the word tandem for team effort - or working together - and something CAN be done to rescue this mess and A NEW STATUE (OR ACTUALLY A BUST WAS "ALWAYS" TED'S WIFE'S PREFERENCE) OF TED BATES reborn. I only work about three quarter time these days in the day job - unsocial hours sometimes included - but I'd be happy to slip a few bob in a bucket if need be - to help "pick this thing up -dust this thing off - and start all over again tra la".

However I want to see the RIGHT PEOPLE calling the shots. People who can organise efficiently, people who can be properly relied upon to action things and monitor them - not just a load of waffle or fancy talk. I remember Jan Formby from my sixties school days. I've never found her anything more than a sincere and caring Saints fan above all. However the Trust people have dropped a clanger big-time - no excuses. Be big enough - hold your hands up - admit it - be done with it - move on - and above all play your part "big heart" fashion in putting this sorry business to rights. CHRIS NEWMAN.

What would the people in Southampton know about art? This sculpture is truly a great piece of work and its abstract appearance sets it apart from the pastiche statues that litter this great country. Would it be preferred if he was sitting on a horse? Maybe more focus should be on supporting the team rather than finding excuses to be little your team's history.

I think I saw the citizen's of Baghdad show their appreciation for one of Iann Brennan's pieces a few years ago on TV. Maybe Southampton fans could do the same. Please ensure that at least one of you smacks the statue in the face with your shoe for true comedic effect.
