Jackson: You picked wrong man for Ted statue

A MAN considered one of Britain's leading sculptors today joined the row over the controversial statue of Saints legend Ted Bates, describing it as "a missed opportunity."

Philip Jackson, the man widely acclaimed for a statue of Manchester United hero Sir Matt Busby at Old Trafford, drove to St Mary's to see the bronze statue after being caught up in the furore following its unveiling at the weekend.

The Chichester-based sculptor said: "It is still my opinion that if Southampton want a good sculpture and wish to avoid further embarrassment, they must bite the bullet and start again."

Artist Ian Brennan from Warsash has promised to make amends to the statue by adding five inches to the legs and pay for the changes himself.

But Mr Jackson said he believed the Ted Bates Trust should have commissioned a different artist to create the full-length model of the Saints legend, insisting that 18 months should have been long enough to produce a life-sized art work.

"One seldom gets 18 months to do a job like this. Most start with a completion date and can be done in a year," said Mr Jackson.

"But £112,000 is about right for a slighter larger than lifesize statue, to include the plinth."

Apart from sculpting the statue of Manchester United legend Busby at Old Trafford, the West Sussex sculptor has also crafted the "Champions" statue near West Ham's ground of their World Cup winners Bobby Moore, Martin Peters and Sir Geoff Hurst. He has also completed a larger than lifesize statue of Bobby Moore, which will be unveiled outside the new Wembley Stadium.

Mr Jackson said: "There are an awful lot of good sculptors that could do a better job, so this is a missed opportunity. A few fundamental mistakes were made and to start with whoever chose the sculptor should have made sure he'd done similar work before."

Am I the only one who thinks that he is trying to get the job of remaking the Statue.
Unfortunately, as with most things, there are always others who claim they can do a better job. It slightly annoys me that the Echo has now gone over-the-top on this story by now weilding out other professionals in the field all claiming they can do better.
What would be a better, and far more interesting, story would be an interview with Mr Ford of the Ted Bates Trust stating what will happen and then him issuing an apology to the Fans and financial contributors for the monstramental muck-up he and his team have made.

It would be hilarious if Phil Jackson gets commissioned to sort the Papa Smurf statue - He's a Pompey season ticket holder!!

How can the echo be going over the top, when even yuo call it 'a monstramental muck up'.
What i'd like to know is, was this chap considered for the commission in the first place, and if not why not? You only have to look at his previous work to see that he would have made a much better job.As for being one of 'the blue few', perhaps one day he'll be asked to do one of Redcrap. That will really test his skill, getting all those faces on one statue!

Dave with respect if he is trying to get the job would that really be a bad thing? I am assuming you have not seen his previous work? If not then I suggest you check it out.

Well everyone's got an opinion on the statue but I wonder how Ted's family feel about it.

What amazed me was that the sculptor who did this one even admitted live on Radio 4 that what he had made was pretty awful. I think he is the one to blame, yes you can be arty if you want to be but a sculpture should at least look like someone if it is a tribute. So what Philip Jackson is saying is spot on.

in today's Echo Philip Jackson goes onto say someone from the Ted Bates Trust visited him at his studio but he never heard back. What a farce!

i hav been to see the statue on more than one occasion and have came to the same conclusion as phillip jackson that the job of producing the statue of ted bates (mr southampton)should of been given to someone who has had previous experience in this sort of work so i would ask the club as a season ticket holder and someone who gave money to the collection for the statue to scrap the current one and start again with someone who knows what they are doing ie. mr jackson ive seen the matt busby one on many occasion and it looks like him unfortunatly not like what we have currently sitting outside the stadium which in my opinion does not look anything like ted bates so mr crouch you offered to pay for a new one nows the time to show what you made of and get it right if you think anything of this club as in my opinion we have not seen much from any of the new board yet .

Stephen Moore and his missus are the ones who appointed Brennan in the first place and are mostly responsible for this mess and they are not even on the Ted Bates Trust committee.

It's a sad fact that if you want the best then you need to employ the best. Clearly someone, on behalf of all the fans and Ted's family, err - didn't do that. Ted's statue should never have been made an emotive training ground for a would-be human sculptor. It's not only the person/people who employed him and the sculptor himself - but also the person who signed off the 'model' as acceptable to the company to caste it - his/their signature sealed our fate. Hopefully Leon is as good as his word - it's about time somebody stepped in quickly to stop us being a laughing stock.
RIP Ted.

Just the thought of someone being a Pompey season ticket holder is hilarious in itself!
Actually it gives me the shivers, poor bloke...
