Adams: Yes, I'm interested in Saints job

FORMER Saints player Micky Adams has thrown his hat into the ring for the vacant manager's job at St Mary's.

Adams made over 150 appearances during his spell at the Dell, between 1989 and 1994, and has previous managerial experience in the Championship with Leicester and Coventry.

He guided the Foxes to promotion to the Premiership in 2003 against a backdrop of financial difficulties.

The 46-year-old joined Colchester United as assistant boss last summer, but left the role earlier this month.

Adams said he would be very interested in returning to the club he loves, this time as manager.

"Obviously, it is a job that would interest me," he told the Daily Echo last night. "I am available for work.

"I had a fantastic time there as a player and I would very much like to repeat that as a manager."

Adams said he would decide in the next few days whether to make a formal application, or wait for an approach from the club.

Both the Saints PLC and football boards met yesterday. The meetings were pre-planned but discussing a successor for George Burley jumped to the top of the list of priorities.

The appointment process is not expected to be a swift one as Saints have had a raft of applications and declarations of interest.

They are sifting through them all to create a shortlist.

From there, a decision will be made as to whether to go straight to one person or, more likely, go through an interview process.

Once that is done, the three- man panel of acting chief executive Lee Hoos, chairman Leon Crouch and football board director Lawrie McMenemy, who will conduct the interviews, will present their recommendation to the boards and the new man will be appointed.

With so many people interested in the job, it won't be an easy decision.

MK Dons manager Paul Ince is the favourite with the bookies after reports he met with club officials yesterday.

The Echo understands those reports are totally untrue.

Seven pages of Saints news, views and FA Cup previews in today's Daily Echo.

Adams is a decent guy as are many of the candidates proposed, I just cant help feeling that we need someone in the keegan mould who will ignite the crowd and players with passion and enthusiasm combined with a fast, powerfull tempo game. Saints are a very well supported club and have huge potential together with very high standards and morales so it should be an attractive job for the RIGHT person. I really dont know who the answer is but fear that Maybe Coleman and Adams etc might just be too mediocre and wont create the surge of excitement that the club badly needs after GB treading water for so long......if only KK hadn't gone to Newcastle....who knows!!.....it has to be someone wee can all respect and who will also bring positive focus to the club....I guess I am going for a Shearer + experienced coach combination..., whoever it is, we just need those 30,000 crowds back at SMS with a positive vibe back around the ground and city. Good luck leon, lawrie etc, we're all in you'r hands.

I'm sure he's a nice bloke and of course an ex-saints player, but,

you're kidding me!

We'd be going so far backwards if he was appointed manager.

We need a manager with experinece!!!!!

Sorry Micky, but no!

The heart says yes, but the head says NO!

The only Ex Saint I would want is Dowie and that is not going to happen.

There are so many Candidates, but the only two that would fit are Coleman and Hoddle. They are available and have the credentials, the fans in general will take too them(Eventually in Hoddle's case!).

It is a No Brainer, if either accept go for it and get winning games and climbing the table!

Sorry Mickey, we need someone who's going to play football and win. Hoddle could do it but no-one wants him here and it's pointless to go backwards, anyway.
Take a punt on Coleman. Proven record, good with tight budget, difficult owners etc. Even if he is Welsh! (Personal prejudice...)
Otherwise, Ince, Shearer, Johnson?
For the time being we're stuck with deadbeats Dodd and Gorman, so we're out of the Cup tomorrow and no points agaist Norwich on Tuesday, the season's over now. no chance of a play-off place unless we get someone good in now.
Sorry to see George go but wishing him all the best - he deserves it after the brainless abuse he's suffered in these columns at the hands of so-called supporters.

Errrr, Mickey Adams has been in charge of 335 games as a manager.

His last job isn't a reflection of his ability, otherwise many managers would never work again.

He did well with Fulham, Brighton and Leicester, getting two of those clubs promoted in his first season. Didn't do as well at Coventry, but he's not a bad manager, but I would still prefer someone with no connection to the club like Coleman.

Worth pointing out that as far as experience goes, the people wanting Paul Ince should be aware he's only managed 68 games and nearly all of them in the lowest division.

Paul Ince would certainly install some passion into the team that seems to be lacking whenever I've seen them this year. He maybe fairly inexperienced in management but he's gone the right way about things.

Hoddle had his chance with Saints and preferred to go to his boyhood club...why give him another ?

Coleman did nothing special with Fulham, Allardyce would be ok if we wanted to see long balls to one up front and Billy Davies is a clone of George Burley.

The championship is about scoring goals and playing attacking football - we don't do that at the moment. We need a manager with a bit of tactical awareness (can't be hard when compared to the last one) and that will make a few brave substitutions to win a game. Draws are no good in this division.

Based upon managing Macclesfield and MK Dons in League Two? I wouldn't say that was concrete evidence he'll be a good manager in the Championship. He has good potential, but he would be high risk also.

Hi lads
This article came up on the Coventry City area of newsnow.net, just reading through your commecnts and I have to say as a Coventry City supporter, I was relieved when Adams was finally pushed from the hot seat here. I voted for him to come to club at the time, off the back of his success with the 'scum' at the other end of the M69. But when he got here, he brought awful players in (which isnt fully his fault as we were £38M in debt at the time) but there were fair better players availabel. I think the one thing that I didnt like about him was that tactically he was bewildering, he would play people out of position even when we had players for those positions playing well and fit (usually sitting on the bench). Adams is also very much a 'mates' type manager, he tends to have his favourites and sticks with them regardless. The only good thing I will say for Adams is that he brought Michael Mifsud i, although I think that was more to do with the scouts insistence than Adams judgement.

Why would Ince take a pay cut to leave MK Dons for a club with no money for transfers and the risk of a first failure? Kevin Blackwell's your man. He did a great job at Luton and towards the end he was not only not being paid but also lending money to some of the players - which fits Southampton's finances perfectly.

Sorry Micky, but what I would like to see a young, ambitious, enthusiastic, winner of a manager.
A lot of the names being linked to the job, have mediocre track records to say the least, none of them would set St Marys alight, however Ince or Shearer would an immediate impact on the whole club. We are all aware that either of these 2 would probably treat the club as a stepping stone, but they would have to do a great job for one of the big boys to lure them away.
As I have mentioned before, we need to attract, not only quality players, but potential investors as well, and I'm not sure that the other names could do this.

Reality, Terra Firma says...

As per my previous post, opinion is divided by emotion. Micky Adams is a smashing bloke and worthy of consideration, but I share the view that he is not what we need right now. I feel that George Burley's major deficiency was man management, and the new person has to have the stature to get the current bunch of players a) earning their wages, and b) driving towards promotion. Obviously the Sam Alladyces etc are outside of our budget and Glenn Hoddel might not be too committed, so that brings us to Chris Coleman and/or Steve Cotterill. Both have proven records of achieveing reasonable sucess with limited budgets, but I am not sure if the players that we have would give them their total respect! Definitely not Billy Davies for me, not becasue of the Derby play off history, but I do not like his "kick and rush" approach to playing football. Oh for an Alan Ball and MLT/Shearer "dream ticket". Although both MLT and Shearer are both comfortably established on TV couches, and RIP Alan. I also appreciate that you don't have to have been a great player to make a good manager, a la Gerrard Houlier etc. Good lukc Leon Crouch, please get this decision right!

I think the ideas to bring in a young, fresh, passionate coach (like Ince/ Shearer) with the support from an older head (Mcmenemy) in the background could work wonders - bring a bit of passion and excitement back in to the club.

Hoddle isn't an option - he's ruled himself out.
Billy Davies would be awful.
Micky Adams is a nice guy, but not exactly inspiring.
It's a shame we can't afford the Big Sam and little Sam combo.

Shearer still loves the club. He could draft in some old playing colleagues as coaching specialists - Flowers (Goalkeeping - also friends with ex coach Dave Coles), Le Tissier (Free Kicks/Penalties/ how to be effortlessly brilliant!), Benali (Tackling!/Commitmen

t). The desire would be there, and maybe it would help to bring a bit of pride back into the players in the squad.

When you think back to the players we had when they all played together, and the number of goals they used to score (Rod Wallace, Alan Shearer and Matty all chasing each other to 25 each for the season!) before Branfoot got involved - they all grew up and played as a unit - and some of the best football we've seen Saints play in the past 20 years.
It might not be as daft as it sounds.

Also: Why do we seem to read so many stupid, time-wasting comments from Portsmouth fans on this site? Nothing going on at Pompey?
And why do the Saints fans bother to reply - they're all ridiculous half-wit comments. Ignore them and they'll go away eventually.
A bit like a bad smell.

Would you have reservations about mark hughes for being welsh, or alex ferguson for being scottish? I wouldn't class the negative comments about Burley on this site as brainless abuse, but i wonder if any welsh people consider your Welsh comment to be just that..

I too wish George all the best but i'm very glad to see him go. the only thing that seemed to be brainless at times was his management.

We have as much chance of winning our next 2 games under Gorman and Dodd than we did with George still here. So lets see some positivity if you are a 'so-called supporter.'

All we need to put the icing on the cake is a major investor to bring in some new players and get rid of the ones who are not committed to the club.

If Simon Walter said he wanted the job would you stick him in the paper?

The local paper is supposed to tell us the facts not just lift stuff from the morning papers.

That's what happens when you employ too many simons!

No no no no no no Sorry Mickey, we need someone who's going to play football and win. Hoddle could do it but no-one wants him here and it's pointless to go backwards, anyway. Take a punt on Coleman. Proven record, good with tight budget, difficult owners etc. Even if he is Welsh! (Personal prejudice...) Otherwise, Ince, Shearer, Johnson? For the time being we're stuck with deadbeats Dodd and Gorman, so we're out of the Cup tomorrow and no points agaist Norwich on Tuesday, the season's over now. no chance of a play-off place unless we get someone good in now. Sorry to see George go but wishing him all the best - he deserves it after the brainless abuse he's suffered in these columns at the hands of so-called supporters. COYS
I'm sure all these so-called supporters will be applying for the job. After all they all think they know more about football than GB.

What happens to your life when you get relegated though. If the only thing that matters to you in life is Skates in the Prem, what a sad existence you must have. I expect you probably top yourself when the Skates get relegated wont you... we can only hope.

I thought you would be a bin man for the council. You must smell like SH*T as well as fish. You poor unfortunate F*CK WIT. Still its better than being on the dole like most of the TW*TS down Frattan Park, which has got to be the most disgraceful SH*THOLE in football. Havant & Waterlooville have got a better ground than you.
