Saints have signed West Ham's Richard Wright on loan for a month.

The 30-year-old shot stopper has previously worked with goalkeeping coach Malcolm Webster at Ipswich.

He has been signed after the three senior goalkeepers - Kelvin Davis, Bartosz Bialkowski and Michael Poke - picked up injuries.

The former England goalkeeper has been kept out of the West Ham side by the form of Robert Green.

Wright signed for The Hammers on a free last summer from Everton, after losing his place to Tim Howard.

The Merseyside club paid £3.5m for his services from Arsenal, who signed him from George Burley's Ipswich in 2001 for £6m.

Now he is hoping to re-establish his career and Saints boss Nigel Pearson sees him as the perfect choice to provide much needed goalkeeping cover with only 17-year-old Academy scholar Andrej Pernecky fit from the club's goalkeepers.

Pearson said: "I am delighted to have got Richard. He is a quality proven keeper with plenty of experience.

"It is a bizarre run of injuries but there is no point being negative. We had to address the situation and I am very pleased to have Richard on board."

thank god, i was thinking we might have to play that 17 year old(no ofensve to the lad.Now we sorted that out, we can all get behind the lads on saturday and get 3 points!. COYR!

Thats a great loan signing, he's got bags of experience at the top level and has been among the best keepers in england when he was playing with Ipswich. I feel there would have been a bit too much pressure on the 17-year-old keeper.

Hopefully he'll be the key to a solid back line in the next month so we can get enough points on the board to beat the drop.

Come on Saints!

Best loan signing I think we could have made at this time. Seems to has lost his way but hopefully he can clean sheet against Coventry!

Nice one nige!

Mr Pearson seems to know good players from bad, which is a refreshing change! Maybe close season he will clear the deadwood in the squad and get in some more quality signings like this.

I know Wright is only on loan, but he is a Premier league bench warmer. If we stay up he is the sort of player we need to bolster the squad.

Can we swop Chris Powell for a loan exchange too?......maybe one of those big tailor's dummies..at least it would foul, moan and laugh less! Powell could not care less...

I wonder how long it will be until he gets injured.......!

Seriously, it's a very good signing and I hope he does well on Saturday - we need those 3 points.....

Yes

Yes, Yes, Yes..

I now have genuine belief that we will stay up rather than just hope.

Pearson has definitely gone up in my estimation

Keep em comming thou.... we still need full backs.

With regards to Wright, "can we keep him,can we keep him"

Nice one Nigel!

Sadly Andrew Davies will miss the rest of the season. Bugger!

Great signing Nigel! Just what the team needs an International goalie to restore some confidence in the defence.

Don't some of us just wish that Rupert Lowe could stay away for a while? Lets face it Crouch has all of our best interests at heart and has probably brought in the BEST MANAGER that the Club could ever have. He in turn is doing everything he can to turn things around....IMHO the only interest that Lowe and Wilde have is in the share price ....why cause a disruption like this at such a critical time?

Keep up the good work Nigel and Congratulations to Crouch for bringing such an excellent Manager to the Club and for paying for Ted Bates's monument out of your own pocket!!! You are a true SAINT!

oh good, now we need a couple of centre backs

Deano, Andover says...

I feel so sorry for Nigel Pearson, 3 goalkeepers injured, now Davies, our best top performing defender, plus other injuries. Calling all Saints fans, we need to get behind the team, if we lose a game, lets not give abuse, go to more games to give our support. YOU try working with a squad we have at the moment, difficult task lies ahead and if we survive relegation this season, I think we will, Nigel Pearson should be thanked by everyone. Once a Saint, always a Saint, every season is different, ups and downs, new players, management and coaching staff. We will be fine come the end of the season. Anyone who abuses, slags off, we don't need it, I know your welcome to your opinion but please support the team vocally as this is what will make us get through our current situation. Your thoughts?

Jez, London says...
4:58pm Thu 20 Mar 08

Impossible to disagree with that Deano. If the fans can see 100% commitment on the pitch then we'll give them our full support. Problem is, of late, that hasn't happened. I think it's clear we have enough talent to stay in this league and it's the manager and players jobs to pull their fingers out and at the very very minimum try their hardest for 90 mins.

If the fans can see that (starting on Saturday) I don't think there'll be too many complaints, whatever the result.

Incidentally, I don't recall a goalkeeper named Lowe.
