VT must match Stags’ workrate
 |
| SWEET MOMENT: Barry Mason, below, nets his early match-winner for VT FC against Christchurch. |
VT FC boss Dave Diaper insists his side must match the work ethic of table-topping AFC Totton if they are to snatch the leadership away from the Stags.
Saturday's slender 1-0 home victory over Christchurch means that if the Boatmen win all eight of their remaining league games - including clashes with the top two, Totton and Wimborne - the Sydenhams Premier title and possible promotion will be theirs.
But Diaper is acutely aware that while he possesses one of the most gifted technical teams in the division, they are still overshadowed by Stuart Ritchie's Totton where work ethic is concerned.
While the other title contenders, Wimborne, Poole and Bournemouth, all dropped points on Saturday, Totton ominously chalked up their seventh successive victory 3-1 at Bemerton to power six points clear at the top.
Having played more games their rivals, Ritchie's men can still be overtaken, but Diaper said: "I still fancy Totton as favourites.
"They went to Hamworthy last Wednesday and had a man (Mat Jones) sent off at 0-0 and still came away 2-0 winners.
"That says it all to me.
"They also went to Moneyfields, lost a two-goal lead, but came back to win it 3-2, which shows a lot of character.
"We're a better footballing side than Totton, but they're better than us at grinding out results. They've got a better work ethic than we've got.
"A couple of months back I said we'd have to be mentally strong to stay in the title race, but one of the biggest problems we've had is some of the long lay-offs between fixtures.
"When you're already behind in games and then you see Totton playing again and getting another three points, it's difficult to cope with."
With the worst goal difference of the top four clubs, VT might have fancied their chances of giving the goals for' column a boost against a Christchurch side whose 4-1 midweek collapse against Brockenhurst had prompted hurt manager Graham Kemp to accuse his players of "sucking the confidence and enthusiasm out of the club."
But, having squandered the chance to go 2-0 up when Warren Hunt fired a penalty wide after a quarter-of-an-hour, VT's performance fell away in the second half as they were left clinging uncomfortably to a seventh-minute Barry Mason strike, teed up by Hunt.
Admittedly the wretched weather conditions didn't help, but it was curious that both sides produced their better football playing into a bitterly cold wind that brought with it a hailstorm followed by a flurry if snow.
"The conditions dictated play," said Diaper. "The problem we had was that we put in so much effort playing against wind, hail and snow and God knows what in the first half that we lost a bit of shape.
"Missing the penalty was the turning point. Warren Hunt only took it because our normal penalty taker, Ryan Ashford, was out injured.
"If we'd gone two up I think we would probably have gone on to win by four or five but at 1-0 Christchurch were always in with a shout.
"If they'd pulled one back, I'd like to think we would have reacted, but the longer the game goes on a 1-0 you tend to be a bit withdrawn and defend what you've got."
Although Christchurch looked the more determined team in the second half, they were indebted to their agile keeper, Jason Collins, for brilliantly keeping Lee Bright's header out of the top corner in the 72nd minute.
But as the minutes ticked by, the more you felt a surprise equaliser could be on the cards and it almost came three minutes from time when Marc Burrows set up fellow Priory sub Paul Rideout for an acrobatic volley which was headed to safety by Kevin Brewster.
VT will require more ruthlessness in a tricky run-in which sees them travel to Poole Town (April 12) and entertain Wimborne (April 15) before hosting a potential title decider against Totton at Portsmouth Road on April 26.
"I've got no major concerns about playing the top three sides because I know our players will be mentally right for the big games," said Diaper. "We've already beaten them all, except Poole."
"But I think these guys are deliberately going to make it hard for me by taking it to the last day of the season. It's alright for them - they're not in the technical area kicking and heading every ball like I am!"
Diaper will be hoping to avoid more touchline torture away to neighbours Hamble ASSC tomorrow (7.45pm). Goalkeeper Scott O'Rourke is doubtful with a back injury and Diaper will not risk ex-Saint Ashford unless he fully recovers from a calf niggle.
VT FC: Scott O'Rourke (Matt Brown, 81), Kevin Brewster, Sam Wyeth, Adam Camfield, Lee Bright, Liam Green, Dean Blake (Jack McCarthy, 87), Kevin Gibbens, Warren Hunt, Barry Mason (Jamie Musselwhite, 67), Marvin McLean. Subs: (not used) Tyronne Bowers, Ed Barnes-Andrews.

From what i have heard Dave Diaper should worry about his own position as manager. Gross Misconduct and breach of club rules are just 2 offences i believe he is being charged with.

Is this not a man who is just putting money into a Club for his own benefits. Why does he not step aside and let a Football person manage it and become chairman. The wages being paid their are a insult to rest of the league.
I think you must pay tribute to the other teams for not letting VT romping the league.DISGRACEFUL

The thing is chaps, you have no idea about what goes on at VT.
The wages that we are supposed to be earning are just rumours.
If you had any idea about what the manager does for the club, then you would show him a bit of respect, rather than post comments of a negative nature.
I'm sure you wouldnt find Christer Warren or Stuart Richie down at their grounds on a saturday morning trying to drain the pitch to get the game on!!!
I'm all for opinions, but you guys are so far off of the mark it's untrue.
As for playing in front of large crowds, yes it is true that we dont get anywhere near to what we as players want to be playing in front of, but we are a local club, that wants to be successful.
What is wrong with that???

The funny thing is, Diaper has spent all that money paying players more money than Southern League players in an attempt to win the Wessex and he'll win nothing. And if VT find themselves in a promotion spot the Southern League won't let them in cos the ground isn't up to standard. Afraid as a Win City fan I've seen it all before thanks to Mr Malone. You have to spend the money on the ground and have a team thats only just good enough to win the league. I hate to say it but Pike had it right at Gosport last year. They sneaked the league on goal difference but that was all it needed. Diaper has a team of well paid players and a park pitch that will go nowhere.

From what I see Dave is not doing a bad job at VT at the moment considering current league position and games in hand!
VT, like many other clubs appear to have a good finacial backing, and as a result have the capability to attract good players, and of course good players come at a price. Is it really that wrong to want to best players possible within a given budget. I have no doubt that EVERY other club in EVERY league is exactly the same.
Perhaps it maybe wise for people to get a bit of perspective rather than air on the side of jelousy!!

Its not rumours but common knowledge big wages are paid at VT.
Its not jealousy but the arrogance of Diaper that gets peoples back up.
And i think you will find that Christer warren and Stuart Richie have Professional Football pedigree and concentrate on what they know best which is not draining pitch 5.

We apppreciate your comments though.

I think the problem is that VT are not honest with their wage structure and it maybe a bit of envy. The club deny what they are paying and this frusrates other clubs. The Manager needs to be honest and set a agenda if he wants to win league after league then that is wrong. This stems from winchester a few seasons ago having a monopoly over proceedings. If those players do not want to go higher then get some players in that do but im sure his players wont get the sort of money they are getting now at any other club in the league.

Sounds like those VT players have got their cake and eating it very well.
Most of them players have dropped down 2-3 Divisions so they would nt do that for a pay cut.

Glad that i'm not alone in finding VT less than pointless, how can you have any respect for a bunch of players that are there patently for the money when they are good enough to play far higher and should be if they were not chasing money.
You are a long time retired in football and they will have plenty of time to look back at how they've wasted their short careers, at least Poole and Wimborne players can look back and say that they played in front of good crowds, VT players can't even use that as an excuse.

Good to see a few CRICKET fans making a few negative comments about V.T on here.
Good work lads.
Oh and how is that new square coming along??
Eastleigh were in the same boat as V.T a few years back and they got loads of stick too.
So did Doswell!!
Look at where they are now?
Great community set up and a great little stadium to build on.
Great structure in general!
Good luck to V.T, you're going in the right direction.
If they have spent good money, its obviously paying off as the league table doesnt lie!!
Good on you Mr Diaper!!!
It shows that they are taking notice of V.T!!!

I heard about this site from one of the boys. What a laugh! Firstly, I play and get paid at VT. I've also know some boys from Wimborne and Totton and guess what? They get paid the same as me! Players talk, and I think you'll find there's none of the pathetic crap above going on between players. Think you'll find if you look at the VT players that none of them will make a career out of playing football now so why would they want to play at Eastleigh, Basingstoke etc when they have to travel all over the place. When you are 21 you can play at that level and be happy to earn £400 a week. When you are 27 and have a mortgage you earn a living from work which means you are not always in a position to travel for 3 hours to a game. So, why wouldn't you play for a decent club with a decent manager in a league that is competative but not have to travel all over the place! You lot need to get over yourselves. Oh and, John Soton, Dave Diaper arogant?! I don't think so. You obviously haven't met the guy. Get a life mate! Anyway, keep posting your boring comments fellas, i'm off to spend some CASH£££!

Any body with a brain would say his manager is decent when your being paid well for doing a job in easier conditions.
Its interesting to see the only comments being made defending this issue comes from players.
So what happens if you win your league will you play for your manager then in the next division.
Thats the problem the wessex league is a platform to another division not somewhere for players and Managers to Lord it year after year and thats why its difficult to understand your clubs thinking.
Mr diaper has already had a pop at the league above it just shows he loves to be a big fish in a small pond.
Im not having a go at the your players, good luck to you if you can get away with it.
Teams like wimborne want to go up.

Its interesting reading these comments and i dont really know of Mr Diaper or what standard of Football he has played, but he has made some detrimental views towards Winchester and Gosport Football clubs recently in the Daily Echo.
He should keep his views to himself and not go spilling the fact that he did nt think either team was good enough.
Perhaps these players have never played at the level you did or never will but what right has he to make the comments he did.Is that not arrogance.

I dont see why the cricket should bend over backwards for Diaper and his team.
Its reasonable to share the two at a grass roots level however i understand the Football section is trying to steamroll through the cricket which eventually would mean no cricket. The cricket has a great following and i know people involved would fight tooth and nail to keep it in place. Please lets keep things in perspective we enjoy are cricketing summers and you enjoy your wessex soccer. Thanks

What a shocking attitude to have from supposedly an ambitious squad, it's a mentality that you would expect to find in a pub side rather than a serious football club.
Sadder still if that is the mentality at your club then you are doing no favours to those at your club who do want to progress, as what manager will want to touch them after being in that environment where easy money over-rides all else.
Wessex competitive? Is that all five teams that you are talking about?

AS you can see DAVE G this is the sort of attitude that the VT players and staff are showing.
They have no respect for anybody else whatsoever and they seem to get away with murder on the pitch.
Some of the players antics towards the refs are a disgrace, but who cares they are VT they can do what they like.

Seems like Eastleigh and V.T have upset people through being ambitious!!!
Get a life!!
P.s The above comments were probably made purely to get a bite from you! And its worked!!

Seriously you lot should get a sense ofhumour, a life, a girlfriend or whatever it takes for you to get over VT. It is so boring......

Think i speak for many that we'll happily get over the works team that is VT as soon they tehemselves realise that they are wasting everyones time pretending to be a proper club and wake up to the fact that its just a glorified money pit still destained to play in front of 50 even if they ever do get into the southern.

Good luck to VT. The Win City fan may like to get along to Pompey Rd (possibly next season when Winch visit?), as it certainly isn't a 'park pitch' anymore, unless park pitches have a big fence round them!
I see the keyboard snipers are out in force again, probably the same people who were taking a pop at Eastleigh. As pointed out above, less than 5 years ago Eastleigh were playing in a bog standard Wessex ground in front of crowds less than 100. I'm not saying that VT can match Eastleigh's charge through the leagues, but they can certainly be a decent Southern League team which would be good for the Southampton area. It is clear that they will need more people through the gate, and maybe a name change (to tap into the old Sholing Sports tradition) - Sholing Vospers?

Good luck to VT. We played them recently and I had heard loads of crap about them being big time etc. I reckon the people above 1) Don't play football 2) Have some weird obsession with slagging people off. Fair play VT if I could i'd move there tomo.

You probably would and sit on the bench for £200 a week.Trouble is you dont play for Eastleigh or play in a higher league or another teams best player.
If your young and want to learn your wasting your time.

There are some small minded envious people on this thread! I'm moving to Sholing in June from west London and it makes me pleased to have the likes of VT and Eastleigh, who i have already visited twice, on my doorstep as i am a regular fan of non league football, [italic]italic[/italic] especially my local team, Harrow Borough. As they usually struggle against relegation it will be a nice change to see a couple of successfull teams. Hopefully both playing in higher divisions next season? The way things are going Eastleigh could be playing at St. Mary's in 2 seasons time. Consider that!

It wont be next year though mate because VT have pulled out on the grading.
How sad is that if they win the league and the money they ve put into it and there not in a position to go up.
I would imagine their will be uproar if they win it, think about it?
It happened to us a few years ago all it does is get peoples backs up and dont come back with VT have the grading because i know 110% that they are out of the running

Could it be that these are people who get around non-league and or support teams already in the leagues above that of VT and would therefore know and understand what it takes to run a club in those higher leagues. And as sad as it may be VT do not have and nor will they ever have what it needs to run a team in those leagues.
What will Diaper do if he ever does get into the southern league, pay premier wages to be sure of getting eleven players out for him on a saturday? Cos as sure as a balls round VT will not be able to finance anything from a fanbase of fifty, VT are a club based on ego and nothing more and it is not envious people posting just people who do know the local nonleague scene.
Look for yourself at the items on Totton on this site, nothing but good wishes and congratulations for them from a wide range of differing teams fans. Hard to believe that if it were indeed just 'envious' postings then the champions elect would escape from it wouldn't it?
And do not even get anyone started on the local nonleague joke that is Eastleigh (how many)FC.
Consider That!

Crikey, people really are bitter/jealous about VT aren't they?
More mention of gates of 50, but as I said earlier, it takes time to build a support base.
Totton's gates aren't exactly massive either are they? But I wish them well in the Southern League (hopefully) next season.
Yes, VT have missed out on the grading, but should be ready for next year. Will be a shame if they now win the league, similar to Winch, but it's not the end of the world, as Winch are now proving.

Stop trying to protect your club.
Winchester are in a mess.
Its due to are greed and not going up when we should have.Your club is in the same state we were and now we find local clubs still hate us for what we done to the local scene.
If you win the league ,well what damage will that do for next season.
Dont kid yourselves.

Its worrying to think that Totton could go to VT last game of the season and will out number there supporters 3-1. Tottons crowds have been massive for them this season, both home and away. They make a massive difference and its pleasing to hear that it will be even more impressive next season.
Thers a 1000 Totton shirts out there, They may all turn up on the 26th. Better get that club house of yours open early!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i think it's hilarious.
all football is about is opinions!!
people should remember this and not get too personal on this site!!!
if Totton go up it's because we were the best team throughout the season and deserve to.
i was speaking to DD the other day, and as a totton fan, i can honestly say that he was a nice guy!!
let's not get personal and put people down.
if people really do feel passionate about this matter they shouldnt hide behind false names and let themselves known.
it's just an easy way to have a cheap shot at the man.
after all, it's only a game is'nt it???

Average crowds for Totton and the works team, and that is taking VT's bumper gate of 168 against Poole into account - they have increased their gate by 4 this year overall and it would have dropped if it were not for a host of travelling fans from Poole.
How much time does it take exactly to build a fanbase, teams like Wimborne and Poole could be in the conference by the time VT put an extra 20 on their gates.
How can anyone justify spending the sort of money that is being wasted on players wages at VT looking for an easy pay day? DD would be better served heading up to Eastleigh and pumping money in their black hole of an accounts book!
AFC Totton 145
VT FC 75

Fareham player... Tony... Dave...Winchester fan and any other. Can you read? Or do you read what you want to read. I've watched VT for years, from the days of the Hampshire League. Why do you have a bee in your bonnet about the club? You say because there's no point to them? Because they have big ego's? Because Dave slags other teams off? 1) VT and other key sponsors fund the wages and the ground improvements. Yes VT cannot go up this year, but yes they have made massive changes to the place. Their application was unsuccessful, thats it! 2) There's is a point to them as with any club they are playing to win the league and ultimately want promotion at some stage! 3) Big ego's! Don't think so! Wasit not Stuart Ritchie that wouldn't shake another managers hand? Oh yes it was. If you are going to read things, get your facts straight! If Totton win the league than fair play they deserve it, if they don't then they don't deserve it. You all need to get a grip, oh and the names above, you obviously are Managers, commitee members etc. Don't embarrass yourselves!

I'm hoping to find the time to make it to the Totton game and will try to be a regular visitor to VT and Eastleigh next season, work permitting. Can one of you tell me what you've got against the Spitfires? They seem a friendly club with a passionate and decent size fan base (complete with drum)for their league.

Hilarious reading all this guff about VT, why does anyone waste their time even talking about them, from what they showed us over two ties in the FA Cup they are nothing more than flat track bullies. Put them against Downton and the players will look class, against us they looked what they are, pub team kickers.
Never seen a team go out and play against us whose sole tactic seemed to be to injure as many of our boys as possible - disgraceful.
Made all of us at Bash feel for the lesser teams in the Wessex that have to go against such tactics week in week out.
Note to the VT players, Davo will never never play for you, as he's a footballer and if he does ever leave us it will be to a team that shows a modicum of ambition rather than a squad of players that like playing at being big time charlies.

Steve Davies you obviously don't have a clue. Vt were really unlucky not to be you lot over the 2 ties. You are in fact 2 leagues higher! As for a kicking side you must def not have a clue! Prob one of the things we lack is someone going around and being niggly and getting in peoples faces! Who is Davo? Not a realtion of yours by any chance. I don't see the point of this site either, jealousy is a bad thing. As someone has said above, VT have some excellent sponsors, maybe it's the sponsors you need to have a dig at (VT, multi billion pound business). Think about it? Who's fault is that? The managers? Na. The players? Na. I tell you what, if it does go to the wire I'd love to beat Totton on the last day of the season and see them stay in our league. As would the rest of the lads. That's because we play to win and not just for money (not asmuch as you think). And, if Totton beat us, fair play, they deserve to go up! Good luck to them.

VT player. Why would Bashley Fans be jealous or envious of you? It's laughable that you think that they even might be. Bad case of believing your own hype or is it that you really think that they would want to be getting beat by Bemerton HH in front of one man and a dog on a cricket pitch.

Could it be that the VT players are'nt trying that hard with the knowledge that however well they play they can't go up anyway? With some ground improvements they can go up next year and wind some more people up! As Millwall say: No one likes us, we don't care!!![italic]italic[/italic]

Whos that excuse for maybe Dave Diaper it must be easy conning the Manager and then picking up your fat wage packets.
Other Managers would have seen through most of your platers now and they would be playing elsewhere.
Maybe after 2-3 years of paying big money your manager might find a backbone and get rid of the superstars . I doubt it though because then he would have to coach a side into a team.

I think what the VT player said above is dead true. Some of you lot on this site only read what you want to read. You pick parts out of comments that you can twist. Seriously, get a life. You sound like the sort that aren't quite there in the head and stand there on a Saturday eating greasy burgers on the touchline discussing with other losers what you are going to write on the echo site! what the VT Player was saying above was fair play to Totton if they win the league! but, if we could beat them we would. Simple as that! Oh, by the way, Steve Riley even said VT played decent football and probably didn't deserve to get beat! Dry your eyes fellas and put your toys away!

If our eyes our damp it's only through tears of laughter caused by your supercilious club.
