Saints sign Perry on loan
Chris Perry
Chris Perry

Saints have moved to ease their defensive injury crisis by signing Chris Perry on loan from Luton.

The 34-year-old centre half brings with him a wealth of experience and provides much needed cover in a position where Saints currently only have Darren Powell and Wayne Thomas available.

Perry made his name at Wimbledon where he started his career in 1991 before a £4m move to Tottenham.

He later went on to play for Charlton and West Brom where he worked with Pearson.

Perry was part of the West Brom side that lost in the playoff final to Derby at Wembley last May.

He was then released and joined Luton in the summer.

He has made 31 starts this season and boasts just short of 500 career appearances.

Saints boss Nigel Pearson said: "Chris is a tough campaigner and a good pro who has played at the top level.

"He will give us greater strength and further options and I am delighted he is joining us."

We should have signed him first of all when he was available in the summer...

Heyho, well that opportunity was missed due to Burley walking around going 'la la la' thinking that Claus and Powell would stay injury free......

Good signing NP - blimey we are getting to say that a lot recently!

Nigel
You have obviously been working round the clock to get a decent CB but Perry isnt the answer. Theres a reason why he is playing for Luton every time I have watched him he as been pants. I hope to god he can prove me wrong!

Up the saints

This seems like a decent acquisition at the last minute, with alot of valuable experience. I just hope he doesn't get crocked in the 1st game and spend the rest of the season in the treatment room like many of our other defenders this season.

A great signing!

At 34 he has a wealth of experience!

Especially of going into administration!

The expression, 'Jumping from the frying pan into the fire' springs to mind!

JESUS!! Has it really come to that, Luton rejects!

Looks like we can say goodbye to the championship and we can say we dont deserve it.

Is there no Prem defenders that we could have got on loan until the end of the season rather than an over the hill reject.

Good signing, i dont think!

A good defender who is good in the air tough in the tackle but does come unstuck against genuine pace.

God help us.Look where Luton are? This player is div2 prospect and no higher than that.Sorry but Chris is now a hasbeen he will do his best, but will be beaten time and time again hence Lutons position in div1.

When you say 'Luton reject', you may want to consider some facts.

Perry has made 44 appearances for Luton this season - only missed 2 I think), is currently fit and playing in the first team.

The fact that Luton are letting him go may have something to do with their own finances, certainly not because he is not wanted.

We don't have to worry about him being any good - he'll probably be crocked after his first 90 minutes.
Ever since Michael Svensson got injured at Fratton Park we've been going through centre-backs at an improbable rate.
Is tomorrow's back page headline gong to be:
Are Sants centre-backs cursed?

This is half the trouble with Saints "Fans"... Perry has had a good career, he's a good player, not a world class player, but nevertheless has played at the highest level for a number of years and here we are staring relegation in the face slagging him off. Doesnt make sense! I think he'll be a good cover signing and will try his best. Good luck to him, and for crying out loud Saints "Fans" get behind the team. Maybe if half of us weren't so fickle and actually turned upto games we could afford a Premiership loan!

andrew davies our best centre half by far played great in a poor team player of the season by far
Posted by: ali di on 2:17pm Thu 27 Mar 08
now we need a creative midfielder? and someone to score some goals.... any ideas?

At first I was shocked by this loan deal, then in denial, then disillusioned.

Now I have begun to accept that this is what we have become.

After the loan of Richard Wright I truly expected the loan of a defender from a mid-table premiership club with little to play for.

We no longer have the financial muscle to compete with teams like Bristol City and Cardiff even though we pay more and have a larger attendance.

It feels like the grieving process now, it will feel worse if we are relegated but then maybe the parasites will leave us be

Disappointed by some of the comments I read on here. Chris Perry is a very useful acquisition under the circumstances with bags of experience. I've no doubt that alongside Richard Wright in goal, he will instil a level of confidence and resilience just when we really need it - the next six games. Let's give him a chance. I think we just need somebody to poke Pericard with a very sharp stick and get him going now!

Well said James at least some of us are willing to give the bloke a chance we need more supporters like you

No disrespect to the Cardiff players, but many will never get another opportunity to play in a semi final which is why, yesterday I suggested that the this Saturday was our best chance of gaining 3 points, if we roughed them up a bit. My thinking was that their players, ahead of their FA Cup semi final the following week, would pull out of challenges rather than risk injury, giving us more time and space to play in. Now NP has signed Chris Perry I guess he must be thinking along the same lines. Perry has, in his time, been a half decent player, but I remember him most for his fouls, many of which occur off the ball. I just hope he has learned to be discreet and doesn't get himself sent off, costing us points as a result.

I find it strange that Pearson is trying to get players in, on loan!
Wouldn't it strengthen the team if he recalled the ones that you have Out on loan?
Posted by: Rich on 3:50pm Thu 27 Mar 08
Come on give Pearson a break, like people have said we couldn't afford a prem player on loan so we have got someone who has been playing regulaly in L1, as Bristol City have demonstrated there isnt that big a difference between the leagues so he should cope. But the last comment doesnt even need to be said as he has looked good quality in the premiership and the c'ship througout his career.
This is a good piece of business as Luton need him off their wage bill as they are even skinter than us. He's not their reject.
Stay positive saints fans and COYR

I saw Perry play at Dean Court a few weeks ago and he had a steady game, after watching Powell last saturday I would prefer to see him come straight into the side.
He is no doubt a good guy to have in the dressing room and if he can inspire our lot he'll be worth his weight.

Southampton have moved quick to enquire about Burnley defender Jon Harley and Derby CB Darren Moore in a sensational loan bid before the Loan window closes tonight.

I think this is a good loan signing, provided he can stay injury free!! I agree with Sailor Sam, why can't we recall Rasiak from Bolton, after all he is not playing regularly there - we are not going to win games unless we can get the ball in the net.

Okay, once more for the hard of thinking;

Rasiak and Skacel are on loan TO THE END OF THE SEASON, this means we cannot recall them even if we wanted to. They also wanted to move so it would be very unlikely that they would want to come back.

Sorry, my mistake. Still need to sign somebody to put the ball in the net - any suggestions? Also, a creative midfielder would be nice - but how many years having we been asking for that - since Jimmy Case stopped playing.

Ok and sorry for the "hard of thinking" crack, it's just that it's been sain time and time again about those 2. As for the striker, no chance the best we could hope for was Pericard and he is grade A rubbish. Give Baseya a go, can't be any worse than Periwinkle or Wright-Phillips and if he is, he should pack the game up.

Makes me laugh, all the comments like he is a div 2 player, over the hill and past it, nonsense, he will fit in fine with the other members of the squad and will feel right at home, no passion, just going through the motions and taking a wage with a smile on his face.

I hate Moore and the kind of football that he represents. However if we need to be Ugly then Ugly we are.

either way it wont happen

It is good that we have added strength to our defence but I am a little dissapointed to see that it is another over 30 player. We have very little pace in our defence and that needs to be added to.
I would love to see another midfielder or striker come in before the deadline, although I think it may be too late....
Comon you saints.

Yes it has got that bad,but at least we should be grateful that pearson has sum half decent mates to bring in coz im pretty sure Perry wont let him down.

We've struggled with centre backs since Michael Svensson got injured at Nottarf Krap back in 2004. Remember Jakobsen? Hajto? since then we've had Powell, Thomas and loanees like Dailly, Bennett, Davies and the fleeting Ian Pearce. I think Perry's a good signing as we need experienced heads at this point in the season.

like these we will soon be promoted.

Sorry guys, obviously John Terry wanted to join but he was busy washing his hair.

Chris Perry is as good as we could have hoped for. I'm sure he will deliver with a few clean sheets. Now all we need is to score some goals.

Saints appear to be bringing in a lot of 'Pee' recently -

Pearson
Pearce
Pericard
Perry

Who is coming next?

Peter Pumpkinhead?
Patrick P*ss
Paul Pants?
Phil Pointless?

Sorry, but I'm fed up with our situation today and need to gob off about it!

All the signs point to Div 1 next season!

As a matter of interest, as the open meeting with the directors only attracted about 80 customers, do you think that Radio Solent will bother with a Stains Fan's Forum before next season?
Would anyone bother to turn up?
Would it only be ones who want to talk on the radio more than ask questions of the directors?

Chris Perry is a good player to be bringing in at this time and situation. He reads the game very well and he is a positive player. He will be a good influence on Wayne Thomas, keeping him alert to danger.Lets show everyone that as a club, we are bigger than what goes on off the pitch by 'singing our hearts out for the lads' at the remaining games of this season.I'll be there next season no matter which divison.
