Warne quits Hampshire
Shane Warne
Shane Warne

Shane Warne will not be returning to Hampshire this summer.

Following detailed and lengthy discussions with Rose Bowl plc chairman Rod Bransgrove, a mutual conclusion was reached.

A club statetment said: "Shane's increasing and diverse business interests were impacting upon both his availability and his cherished time with his children and both parties were keen the club should have clarity about its future."

Bransgrove said: "I know this will be a major disappointment to many fans of both Hampshire and Shane but, after much discussion and soul-searching, it has become clear to both of us, that Shane can no longer make the commitment required to continue to lead Hampshire.

"His many other business and charitable activities, together with his strong desire to share quality time with his beloved children, makes further extended periods away from home unmanageable at this stage of his life.

"After the commitment and loyalty he has shown to this club over the past few years, I can only wish him all the success and happiness he deserves."

Rod continued: "Hampshire Cricket has been hugely privileged to have enjoyed the unstinting loyalty of this living legend since 2000.

"The most effective and entertaining bowler of all time, Shane Warne was also a brilliant leader and strategist.

"As our captain, his influence was instrumental in the development of Hampshire into one of the country's top sides and he enriched the game wherever he played.

"I am sure that all our supporters will join us in, firstly, thanking Shane for his dedication and commitment and, secondly, wishing him and his family the best of wishes for the next phase of his life. Warnie will be sorely missed, never forgotten and always welcome at The Rose Bowl".

Shane Warne announced from Melbourne: "My eight years with Hampshire have been a wonderful experience.

"I have memories and friendships formed at the club that will last with me forever.

"Unfortunately I'm retiring from all first class cricket but will participate in the IPL with the Jaipur franchise as captain and coach.

"I would like to take this opportunity to thank Rod, Paul Terry and Tim Tremlett for their ongoing support and the opportunity to captain the club, and I wish them all the best for the coming season.

"To the players, thank you very much for your support and friendship. I was very lucky to have played with such a wonderful group of guys, thanks for the great times.

"To all the support staff at The Rose Bowl, thank you for making my time at the Club an enjoyable experience and making me feel so welcome.

"To all the fans that have turned up to watch the Hawks play, thank you very much for embracing me as one of you, and supporting me and the team, it meant a lot to me.

"To Dimi the new captain, who is also one of my best friends, good luck with it all buddy, my thoughts are with you and the guys.

"This was not an easy decision to make but due to some exciting business opportunities and wanting to spend more time with my children, I had to make this call.

"Good luck to all involved at The Rose Bowl I wish you all the best."

Hampshire manager Paul Terry said: "I've been extremely lucky to have had the best seat in the house for the past few years working closely with this legend.

"I'm very sorry, although not entirely surprised Warne has come to this decision. Most importantly it's his deep affection for his three lovely kids that strongly influenced this decision and it's now he feels the time is right to spend more time with them.

"He has been fantastic for the club with his incredible enthusiasm, drive and skill as captain. He will be missed considerably on the field as there has never been anyone better but most importantly he will leave behind a host of friends that he has made through his kindness, generosity and loyalty.

"He will be missed, but certainly never forgotten, and I personally thank him for the experience and wish him fantastic success in all his future endeavours."

Warne took 276 first class wickets for Hampshire at an average of 25.59.

He made a total of 2040 runs, including a highest score of 107 against Kent at Canterbury in 2005.

Supporters will have an opportunity to say farewell to Shane later in the year when he will return for an end-of-season dinner at The Rose Bowl, the date of which will be confirmed and announced in the very near future.

I feel the correct decision has been made. Great player he has been for us but he wasn't at his best last season and has clearly shown by signing for the IPL and to play poker that he was committed for the long-term.

It just shows how stupid it was to get rid of Shaun Udal, but hopefully we will now see a prolonged run for Liam Dawson in the side as he definitely has the ability and potential with the bat and ball to become a quality spinning alrounder in the future for Hampshire.

well feck you too Warnie, what a flaming farce, why couldn't you have said this at the end of last summer? then we could've got in an overseas player for the whole season.
all your talk of loving Hampshire :-total bollards.I hope you realise how badly you have let us all down , I thought you were better than this

i'm more of a football man but follow the hawks as and when i can. Just wanted to say thanks for the memories warney you're right up there with marshall and gower as one of the best players ever to play for the club. Yeah its been no secret that it was going to happen but lets be realsitic if someone told us all ten years ago we would have the best spinner in the world playing for us we would have bitten their hand off so lets all just wish him all the best, i've met him a coulpof times through friends and he's a top top bloke.
Good luck warney , a genuine class act.

As Ron Bromsgrove said after all the dedication and loyalty Warne has shown to Hampshire we can only hope he gets what he deserves.quite what that is I dont know but Hampshire may well be better off now they can rebuild. When Mushy finally retires at Sussex I dont expect to see such crocodile tears.

Well, what a farce! For Warne to make this decision three weeks before the start of the season is ridiculous. But more ridiculous is the fact that Management at Hampshire have allowed themselves to be jerked around in this way. And now we have appointed a Captain who may miss substantial parts of the season whether with the IPL or England. No disrespect to Dimi but how can you do the job properly when you may be away for extended periods? This looks like the recipe for a terrible season, and it will be largely down to the Management and planning. Lets hope the guys can respond to this nonsense and perform out of their skins!

Well you brought us more column inches than trophies. Perhaps we can now begin to rebuild our relationships with other counties once again.

You promised us a championship and talked up our chances every season, whilst Chris Adams quietly went about captaining Sussex to three championships in five seasons.

Warne was a great international player when surrounded by world class players but a little less potent with a group of average county players.

Enjoy the IPL and Las Vegas.

This is devastating news. It was so much more fun beating Hampshire to titles when Warne was playing against Sussex. I see he failed to mention the County Championship in his piece for the BBC's Sports Review of the Year (2007). I wonder why that was.

It's not crickeet that without Warnie. Shane is one of crickeets greats. 700 Test wickets is a massive achievement for anyone. If only mobile phones had come along twenty years later then Sir Shane might have taken even more lad.
Good luck to Shane!
That right means that thou top spinner in the country is that blighter Mushytag at Susseex.
There're a rit danger this year thou knows.
Well goodnight all.

We once had a captain called Shane
His wizardry well on the wane
A shambles, a joker,
Who’d rather play poker,
He won’t play for Hampshire again

Well there's a surprise, my former buddy who spent more time on his mobile phone, having his roots done, and playing poker, assured me he was coming back to win the grand slam, and put one over our illustrious neighbours at Hove, for Hants this year.
He led me to believe I was only gonna be a fringe player this year cos there is only room for one spin king at the Rose bowl,(and that dosn't include the spinning maestro Mushey when Sussex visit)so I went off and joined Middlesex, funny old team, 1/2 men , 1/2 women, and iv'e gotta wear those silly pink shirts, what do i look like?
Seriously thinking about changing my nickname.........
Mr R Branson the chairman has been stitched up by Warney, thank heavens we've got Nic, ("thats the way to do it") to lead the club now, my only worry is that he is better than any batsmen Sussex have got and he could be the next England wicket-keeper is he dosn't get selected for Lesbos

That's right rubbish poetry that is Zaremba. How thou won limerick competion on that useless Sussex Message Board only thou knows.
You must be one of their Mason lot as that's the only way thou could have won.
Or how many yorkshire tea bags did you slip that Sweaty Doc to win - a couple of box fulls I reckon heckerslike.
It's not crickeet was that!

What is P Boy going on about? Rebuilding relationships with other counties. No way mate!

Make Pothole captain and he will ensure we continue to stick it right up our south coast rivals. He knows they dont have any batting and will definitely have the confidence to help Dimi (when he's here) and One Leg Tremlett bowl them out for less than 50 everytime. We have a very promising young spinner to complete our awesome attack and sussex have only got that old bloke with a grey beard.

Hampshire Hawks are flying high and would soar like an eagle if we put the Pot Hole in charge.

Just do it Bromsgrain.

Oh no, what bad news we hear, no fat bloke waddling around the pitch at all. Surely this is a joke and he will be there to lead us through thick and thin and help us hold off relegation, as he promises every year.

Surely his poker can be rescheduled, his hair stlist moved closer, a new contract with all the mobile phone companies, anything to make fatboy rise from the ashes that are the mighty hawks ( well they must have had their wings clipped)

HA HA HA what a joke this lot are, get rid of Udal as fat boy is going to stay, appoint Demi who is after the cash, Tremmlett out injured, could anyone fit in any other county team?????

Typical Rose Bowl plc management. No surprise from a businness 10m GBP in the red and no hope of recovery. Details at 11...

Maybe now you will regroup and be a more competive team i think you will be better off without him, looking at some of his disicion making it was always muddled without any direction.

We certainly agree with Pot Hole for Captain who said "Make Pot Hole captain and he will ensure we continue to stick it right up our south coast rivals". Oh, yes please Nic and can you just imagine him t0ssing before each game ! mmmmmm love you all xx

Rumour is that he found out Paul Terry was earning more than him and he said he should be earning the most and if he doesnt he would not come back. Rod said no and hence Warne retiring!!
