Askham: Why I'm still backing Rupert
|
| Rupert Lowe |
The man who first brought Rupert Lowe to Saints has backed his return- but has warned major cuts will have to be made to stabilise the club's finances.
Guy Askham, who was chairman at the time of Lowe's reverse takeover of Saints in 1997, has spoken out to explain his support for the return of Lowe along with another former chairman, Michael Wilde.
There is a clear divide of opinion over the state of the finances of the club between the outgoing board led by Leon Crouch and the new one of Lowe, Wilde and Andrew Cowen.
Both parties also apportion the blame for perceived problems to different places.
What does seem clear is that Lowe and Wilde are bracing themselves to make unpopular cuts that could include reducing the wage bill of the first team squad, though they are keen to put cash into the academy.
Askham, who rarely speaks publicly, issued a statement to the Daily Echo in which he explained his reasons for siding with Lowe once again.
Guy Askham's statement - see today's Daily Echo.

One cut back is directors don't take a wage until the club is decently solvent again.
Guy: you got us into this mess. I hope you are ashamed of yourself.

I think most thinking Saints supporters are glad Lowe is back to steady the ship.I think we can now a sensible push for promotion next season.

The target for next season remains having a Club to support at the end of it.
reducing the wage bill of the first team squad, though they are keen to put cash into the academy.
Reduce the wage Bill yes (including the directors wages)
Push money into the academy NO!!! Now is not the time. If we push what little money we have into the academy we won't see it's benefits for years to come. We need to rebuild now in the hope that we won't be scrapping it out again next year. Give money to Pearson who I believe can make sensible Championship signings i.e. hungry, prehaps older professionals that know what is needed at this level and won't want rediculous wages to do it.
I'm not happy with Lowes return, please get something right Lowe. You're like a broken record harping on about our academy. Yes the products of our academy have kept us solvent since going down but who was a large factor in us going down? Rupert Lowe!!!

As you are using navy metaphors, I will continue by saying that Lowe rocked the boat in the first place, leaving us rudderless with atrocious appointments meaning we did not win matches in the relegation season we should have done so when the stormy seas came at the end of the season we were sunk.
He is full of wind in his sails but steers in the wrong direction most of the time.
Yes he is back, but most fans see him as a pirate who has come to plunder the club again and line his pockets with waht treasure is left.
Most fans are looking for a real chairman who has more ideas than this.

Askham has zero credibility, of course he would side with Lowe, the man has no backbone and would jump off a cliff if Rupert asked him to.
Believe you me, the people who will be financially bailing out the club will be [bold]THE FANS[/bold] . [bold]Lowe is going to put ticket prices UP.[/bold] He sees it as our fault the club is in this mess, so we have to pay to it right. Meanwhile all the freebies for Lowe's chums will carry on, no cost cutting there!

Most thinking Saints fans will be glad that Lowe's back? Only those with a short memory I reckon. Just another sad day for our football club. Don't think for a minute that us fans are going to get any better deal to the dross served up by the last shambolic chairman. The big difference here is massive cost cutting measures and a much less active persuit of investment.

I don’t think it is a good idea getting in old professionals because they wont hack it in the Premiership anyway
We need to build a team from our Academy or other young players and hope they do not want to jump ship and join the bigger clubs.
Of course we need to get in a couple of really classy players I was in Portsmouth in the week and noticed in a window a picture of their recent promotion team with Paul Merson and Steve Stone.
But I expect cannot afford high wages at present so that type of player is out of the question.
It is going to take some time to get back to the Premiership and to stay there.
About fifteen years ago I met someone at work who supported Hull City they were currently in Div 2 he was despondent but he had visited all but two clubs in the Football League.
His time may come next weekend so why cannot we just be patient and wait because one day our day will come and we will return to the Premiership.

It is ironic that the man who put Saints where they are should come back in to save them.If we need reminding it was Lowe who employed his friend Clive Woodward and paid him a fortune with no return ,paid himself a fortune and to his credit took a pay cut on relegation. But them promptly sold the family silver and put NOTHING back in.As a club we are not in the BEST hands if we wamt to go ahead in football terms but we will be stabilized financilly the LONG term which means forget the Premierhip in the forseeable future. We may have to go down and build again the future is not bright but I guess beggers cannot be choosers and it looks like we will be begging the bank to keep us afloat. We are in BETTER a hand but not the BEST hands

In reality it is unlikely a club like ours with limited cash resources will gain promotion and stay up.

I agree with the more cerebral Saints fans who appreciate the sound business & financial common sense that Rupert Lowe will bring. He gave us a great new stadium, and tries to promote from within - Good Luck!!

As for these rose tinted spectacle wearing charachters on here telling us Lowe is our saviour, all I would say is that if he had any supporters, they wouldn't come on here to say so as no one tells you when they are happy with something, they just go about their business. We only put pen to paper when we are irate, outraged and feel an injustice is taking place. - yet for some strange reason, a lot of people are going out of their way to sing his praises on here :o/
Wonder if he has shares in a PR company as well ;0)

The similarity between Lowe and a garden centre now springs to mind whereby the young "plants" will be brought on, put in the shop window for a few weeks to develop and then sold on to the highest bidder. The trouble is, to pay for the development of theses young exotic species lot of people have to buy a a great deal of tatty old rhubarb!

im glad lowe is back too (queue the PR plant responses) as look where it got us to get rid of him..
people slate him for penny pinching, then blame him for the debts...which one is it....
we could have spent mega bucks in the prem, not have half wages relegation clause and probably not have a club now..
what is it people actually want..
my guess is they have no idea..
poor show

There are many, many Saints fans who are 'cerebral' when it comes to our club. Fans may well dwell on the timing of the takeover, close enough to the end of the season to craft three noteworthy press stories on the eve of our last three home games, knowing the EGM will be organised as late as possible to coincide with the Alan Ball match (there was no love lost between him and Alan assisted with the original Wilde takeover) and to ensure that his first match back will be in August then there is unlikely to be any vented anger.
Cerebral Saints Fans think about the club all the time: this old chap is thinking about himself, his money, his shareholders, and somewhere right on the arse end of his priorities are us fans.
Here's hoping its a very short chairmanship, and that the next fella has the business acumen and is a bit more cerebral when it comes to Southampton Football Club.

I have said it before - never in my 50 years of following the Saints has the Club been in such a bad state. Lowe must take some responsibility for the current position. Just think all the managers he paid off in his years in charge.
IMO I think most "thinking" fans DO NOT want him back in charge. Please can we have a "White Knight" to rescue the Club from this mess!

Yes the products of our academy have kept us solvent since going down but who was a large factor in us going down? Rupert Lowe!!!
I disagree Wazza. The academy is the foundation that the team has to be rebuilt on. With the little money available, what would the quality of the players be at the price we could afford? About the same, or less, than the ones we were moaning about last season.
Good quality players have been produced by the Academy in the past, only to be sold for some other club to reap the benefit.
If we produce quality players, and more importantly, keep those players, we could reap dividends in the long-term.
Spend money on second-raters now, they last a season, maybe two, and we are back in the same hole again.
Give youth a chance! Academy products are more loyal to the club than those bought in the transfer window!

The Rupert Lowe plants always stand out on this site by their reflection of his obvious belief that he has a better mind and reasoning power than any of his detractors.
Leaving that argument aside, what Lowe needs to recognise is that his man management and team building skills are right at the bottom of the scale. I say this because he (a)got through 10 managers in 10 years and (b)failed to recognise that Clive Woodward would do nothing but cause mocking, distrust and resentment.
Being averagely good at numbers does not make you able to run a business, even a medium sized one like SLH!

Its odd that a bloke writing in Portsmouth over 100 years ago should so accurately describe SFC's position in the early 21st century. "Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure nineteen nineteen six, result happiness. Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure twenty pounds ought and six, result misery." The current credit crunch is a larger scale manifestation of the same thing, and it has a dire effect on economies, jobs and prospects in all sorts of ways.
Askham and Lowe both realised that it also applies to football clubs, especially ones like SFC that have never been, and never had the capability to be, world-wide "brands", unless a lifelong fan who happens to be a sugar-daddy wants to pour many millions of his own money into a very uncertain risk. (Would you, really?).
Personally, I believe that what they achieved for the club was an improbable period of survival in the top level of an ever more money-dominated sport, by holding fast to that truth and by developing an imaginative strategy to cope with it. A horrendous conjunction of injuries to key players who the club could not afford to replace adequately eventually toppled us off the top table, and this season very nearly did for us in the Championship. That's football. Its a tough game. Its a tough business. I have been a season ticket holder for 30 years, and I am not a shareholder (and nor am I in any way connected, particularly not in the obscene way imagined by some of the silly people who pour out their vitriol on here, to Lowe or Askham or SFC or the Echo (God forbid!)), but I love SFC and am grateful for all the great years, sad that we are in our current plight, and hopeful that a return to financial sanity will first of all stop the club disappearing into oblivion and then start us on the road back to success. But I'll keep supporting them any how.

Why then are Wilde and Lowe totally pretending that this possibility does not exist?
Anyone who thinks Lowe is acting in the best interests of the club had better think again.
I hope that whoever regulates companies is keeping an eye on this - directors are required to act in the best interests of the company and not of their shareholding.
Unfortunately, Southampton have now got a Board where every member is protecting his share value and ignoring what will benefit the club ie major new investment.

Askham and his fellow directors who turned the club into a public company and brought in Lowe and Cowen are to blame for this mess. We will have to return to private ownership before we have any success.

Surely anyone in business will appreciate when decisions are made in an organisation and those decisions cause near financial ruin (as Lowe appears to be claiming) then the people who oversaw those decisions should be held accountable. As it is, Lowe and Wilde seem to have a blatant disregard for the soul of this club - THE FANS! I just hope Lowe stays out of the football side of things and we manage to get a decent squad together over the next few years.

to be honest some cuts may need to be made - lets just hope they choose to sell off the high earners that dont deserve a tenth of their wage such as BWP, Dyer, Idiakez, Skacel and Rasiak.
im confident that if we can keep pearson he may be able to wheel and deal. and just because we had a bad season and there will be changes and less money does NOT mean we cannot mount a promotion challenge, if this season has taught us anything about this division is that money doesnt buy success (leicester anyone???) Bristol city made 1 big money signing for £1m and theyre in the playoff final with hull who have also spent pittance (maybe a bit in wages), i think it literally down to the managers and the momentum of your team in this league so i pray for some solid older professionals to come in alongside some young hungry players as i believe thats the best blend - palace, west brom, hull, bristol city, stoke - all have these blends. you could say we have older pro's but they are not solid enough and our youngsters - using BWP as an example - are mostly not hungry enough! (lallana is though)

Why does he or anyone else think he will make a better fist of running things this time? He was overly prudent at the wrong time and failed to invest in the squad, failed to back his decent managers, created an environment in which quality players did not want to come here, demonstrated a cronic lack of understanding of the football world, and generally gave off a snooty arrogance and air of superiority which many found thoroughly distasteful.
I love Saints to my core and always will, and because of this I'm sad, to say the least, that this man is back in charge of my club.

So hisplan is cut the first team, sack the managers and build up the academy isn't that waht he did last time and got us relegated and almost bankrupt. The only way to make money from English football is to be in the Premierhip. Small clubs like Wigan, Pompey and Boltonthat have achieved this by buying good first team players at high wages, having a consistent manager and having an academy when they can afford it. Have you learned anything while you have been away you moron Rupert

John, I was appreciate debate and in the past we haven't always agreed!
But I am sorry to say that now is not the time to be putting our money into the academy it will take years to reap the benefits i.e. quality players. In the time we are building up our youth players our first team will get worse. We need to spend our (unsubstantial) money on first team players that are better than what we have now.
What good is a better academy if we do not improve our first team squad (a squad that narrowly avoided relegation) and end up getting relegated next season?
Do we have enough money to strike a happy medium? If it is strictly a choice between investing in the academy or first team, then for me the first team is priority because I don't want another last day of season great escape!

I can not believe the joint statement Wilde and Lowe made yesterday.
Before you guys have the right to ask for our backing, you have to earn it! To date history shows you have done very little to earn this.
Wilde so far and I want to be wrong. You come across as a turncoat! You promised the world and delivered nothing, and your story changes quicker than the tide!!
Lowe apart from running a tight ship, you are just as bad as the other clowns running our club since the reverse take over. What lesson have you learnt. Running a tight ship only goes so far. You fail badly over your first long term to see that football is a money game now. On this note you failed to even look or find investment, and possible why people view you as looking after you own interest. More so you failed to realise that to bring in fans revenue, you have to provide entertaining and successful football (buying quality players). Saints fans deserve to have a club competing at the very top, and for you to say the reality of this club is simply we are a finacially poor club, and should lower our level to just accepting this. Well I say B###KS. We are here partly because of you and all the other crap in the boardroom. But mainly because it is your job to bridge this gap and get us to were Southampton F.C. deserve to be. Not talk about magic fairys waving a wand. I go as far as to say it is your job to do it sooner than later, and it really angers me to here you say no need to rake over old grown, because where in a mess, and then hide behind these facts. THE OLD GROUND WAS YOU TOO! Please show some passion and will to deliver us what you paint as the impossible. Show us that you and Wilde have learnt, and get us the investment we need to deliver the football which will deliver the results all round!
Lastly YOU employed the pratt Harry, who everyone but you saw did not care. YOU employed Harry who took us down, and that should be your biggest debt to repay all Saints fans, to get us back in the top flight!
The team needs investment, and your job is not to keep things ticking over and getting paid. We are not a corner shop. You need to find and manage the investment needed to make Southampton F.C. a stronger team to get automatic promotion in this tough fizzy league.
Show some passion and commitment to fill this clubs potential sooner than later! Stop handing out facts and hinding behind them.
You guys are suppose to be bussinessmen. So bridge that finacial gap. Take your lead from other clubs who do, and find that much needed investment. Stop thinking small!!

The fact Askham, above Lowe in the 'most despised man in Southampton history' stakes, is commenting says it all. Lowe knows this. Wilde knows this. These f*ckin w*nkers are here to destroy our club and nothing else. Why release comments from this man? The Echo, itself, has a lot to answer for. PR war, sniping and power stuggles and the season hasn't even started yet. Next season will be even worse, maybe they plan to take us down for some business plan, who knows with such devious snakes. Look at their track record, and business accumen *coughs*
Be afraid, be very afraid. Sorry to say, hoardes of people are now not going next season and I, personally, think boycotting the club would be the only way to make these idiots realise. They are NOT welcome!!

'We need you' they cry - of course they do, they need us more than we need them - how else they gonna earn their inflated salaries by conning the people of Southampton that they are it this as fans of football.
Lowe only supports his wallet, and that's a full time job which doesn't let sentiment or good will get in the way. Well Mr Lowe, we are not ignorant bumpkins here to feed your ego, and we will stay away to make a protest against the regime. Yeah, its hard but necessary if we really want the club rid of this tyrant.

COYR
Forced out but the 'minority' - my furry derriere. Since when has Lowe been in awe of the little people, he was ousted by 2 groups, the fans singing in united disgust at his atempts to placate with years of under funding and then some people with clout buying stock.
The SISA members and Northam yobs are the ones that would stand in the rain in the Milton and the Archers keeping the passion alive on cold January nights in 1987, so don't sit in your cushioned seats and belittle the hard core fan base sunshine.

Couldn't agree more - especially as at this moment in time we have some very, very good young players. Thomson, White, Paterson, Hatch, Mills, James and Baseya are all committed to the club. Lets get them involved next season.

COYR
You mean some very, very good income possibilities. C'mon, cut the BS Lowe fan boys, we know your esteemed guru Rupert sees the academy for one thing only, a buy low, sell high business opportunity.
And c'mon PR guys, we know your mandate is to put either Saints in your name, that you are a committed season ticket holder in your comment, that Wupes has his faults in there as well and then end with the trite and overused COYR - I may be a bumpkin as has been noted, but I can smell you PR guys a country mile off.

I'm not sure quite how to interpret this.
Is a 'real fan' someone that spends a certain amount of hard earned cash on games? Someone that goes home and away yet slates whoever runs the club?? What about a teenager that doesn't earn much yet still wears the shirt with pride - is he a real fan??
Would Mr Lowe be classed as a 'real fan' cos he owns shares in the club???
What exactly?? Cos with statements like that you appear to be some kind of fool.....perhaps 'real fans' all support Man Utd???
