THE future of Southampton's nationally important Solent Sky Museum has been secured after plans for a "spectacular" revamp were given the go ahead.

The tatty museum - described by one councillor as looking like a Toys R Us store - will be rebuilt within a six-storey building containing 50 flats.

It is hoped the new-look museum, off Albert Road South, could be open in two years after a developer won outline planning permission.

Solent Sky curator Squadron Leader Alan Jones said: "Until recently we had an uncertain future. This decision not only establishes us in the city but gives us the opportunity to develop the museum in an exciting and innovative way."

Mr Jones said extra space would allow more aircraft to go on display and added that he hoped to attract external exhibitions by improving the museum's "corporate image."

Mr Jones ruled out another rebranding of the 22-year-old museum, formerly called the Southampton Hall of Aviation. However, he said the city council had a large part to play boosting Southampton's overall attractions to tourists.

Visitor numbers to the museum have dropped from 40,000 to just 15,000 in recent years. The museum rebuild is being financed as part of a redevelopment of the area by Kings Oak Partnership. It will also see a complex of 53 flats and four commercial units, up to seven storeys high, built off Canute Road, with 18 car parking spaces.

The museum will have 29 parking spaces for visitors and residents, although no dedicated coach park.

Space for the 424 (City of Southamp-ton) Squadron ATC which sublets part of the present museum will be retained, but cut by about one third.

Five protected trees will be retained and developers plan to close and raise a stretch of Albert Road South between the sites to provide an escape route from lower ground in case of flooding. The plan will provide a further 17 parking spaces.

Good for the museum it's been looking shabby and unloved for years!
However, obviously just a way of getting even more flats into the city (probably to stay empty for ages too!) Anyone else see an issue with 53 flats 4 commercial units and only 18 parking spaces...

We have a fantastic aviation heritage. Let's hope that all stakeholders really get behind the revamp. Does sound like the developers are calling the shots as usual.

More negative comments so nothing new, maybe we should give up or all the negative people go and live somewhere else. I think it is good news for the city.

Great news! It's a brilliant little museum, but it's a shame that it's tucked away out of view. I'd like to see it in a prominent position where people enter the city with the spitfire out the front in a glass room...why have models and sculptures when we can use the real thing???

Having visited Solent Sky three times over the past 5 years, I thought it had a warmer atmosphere than many other museums do, where /as it is, and it is tidy, how can it be called shabby? Does everything have to be 'sterile?' The aicraft are also well protected in what looks like a climate controlled environment. But at least this new turn will mean room for more aircraft to be displayed, I hope. However, ultra large very modern buildings detract from the exhibits themselves. Though its current building is still classed as modern, it had been around long enough to feel 'matured.' The area about it is loosing its charm a lot like those new flats and other accross the road, and other similar 'development' so I found the museum to be a haven from that, where you could drift back into an era when style mattered as well. The work of the volunteers there at Solent Sky is most commendable.

u clearly dont know the property market in this city. new developments are snapped up before the building is actually built.

Great news, just what the museum needs!!

I agree with Dave though. 18 car spaces for 53 flats should be more like 100 as most couples/families have at least 2 cars.

Also where are all the visitors to the new museum going to park, probably miles away!

Will it have an Ice Rink?

Why the Flats, why, why, why!!!

I suppose the plan is the people in the flats will work for the museum and not need a car to travel to work lol

Sounds very similar!

Does no one realise this is nothing to do with the museum, and everything to do with a developer being able to put up more thin noisey flats.
They don;t care about parking - anymore than the council. The buildings they are throwing up now will not stand the test of time either - not being made of wood and only skinned in brick.
If the council cared about the city it would insist that there were sufficient spaces for all people to park their cars and drainage systems that could cope with the extra "inputs"!

How can planners let 53 flats only be built with 18 parking spaces? There is already a major parking problem in Southampton yet they allow this? Just goes to prove that if developers throw enough money at the problem it goes away!
Corrupt is the only word to explain it!

Not good for "424 (City of Southamp-ton) Squadron ATC "

1. Space being cut, its not big enough for the amount of use already!

2. They meet Tuesdays and Thursdays... where will they go while being re-developed?

One min we are told they want kids off the streat, the next they are taking their venues away and cutting the size!

Cities are under pressure to provide fewer parking spaces where 'sustainable' transport is provided in the area. What the city should do is provide more free overnight parking in secure neighbouring car parks that are chargeable during the day.

Lol, lol, lol, not standing the test of time?

lol. They will last 50-100 years, like any design life of a house etc.

The goverments/local and main, are thick, they believe people that live in a major city will do everything in that major city, Shop, Eat, socialise, work, live, have friends and that "IF" these people were to travel (god forbid) to another county or country!!! they would use top quality, 5 star public transport and not use a car.

The moment the primeminster gets out of his car and uses the bus to go to Parliment etc, i will.

Freeaks.

Neil & Sam bang on. Come council what are the Cadets going to do whilst the new building is being developed. Why is the new building for the Cadets smaller. I know why because we have a gutless planning commitee in the hands of developers and have absolutly no intrest in the people that are effected by the planners decisions. The staff and cadets at 424 group are a tribute and an assett to this city and should be looked after accordingly

Good news for the museum but more flats as well as Vospa site project, unnessassery!

As i've always said they're better off relocating the museum on the vospas site thus make access more inviting for the public, but council don't thing logically do they!

What is the Vospas site? Does this refer to the Vestas Blades wind turbine place at Woolston, or is the intended word Vospers?

the same way that they allow a private planning aplication to go through changing a 3bed house to 1 ,3bed and one 2 bed dwelling , the only proviso that the owner provide cycle storage, they don't care about parking cars Parking space is already at a premium

cadets of 424 are a credit to the city and should be given more space.maybe they should be shown just a little more respect and not treated like an inconvenience.Give them the space they deserve to encourage more to join.

I took my kids there last year and we had a really good time there. The exhibits were excellent and the staff were really hands on and helpful. Its hard to find and parking is a premium there. It would be nice to see it in a prominant position with a design that makes the most of the spitfire and skyboat, but I guess its too late. I hope the company responsible for the planning and building do it justice

On behalf of Kings Oak Developers who are actively involved with this scheme I am very pleased that this development has been awarded Planning consent by the Local Authority, as clearly the museum has been struggling for visistors over more recent times, with this being fully recognised by the Solent Sky curator Squadron Leader Alan Jones, who is 100% behind the redevelopment proposals himself, as it is widely accepted that change is very much needed in order to try and bring the museum back to life and increase visitor numbers.

As regards to the parking issue, we as developers would have ideally liked to include additional spaces, but unfortunately our hands were tied by a maximum parking allowance imposed by the respective L.A, restricting us to a maximum number as approved.

As regards to the cadets, it is very clear from the Planning consent awarded that the scheme does accommodate the future interests of this operation as defined in the Plans themselves, so the ongoing assurance of the cadets remaining is guaranteed and fully supported by Kings Oak Developers, as we also view this as a vitally important and integral part of the community!
