JAN Poortvliet has spoken of his pride at being named Saints' new head coach.

The Dutchman, who played in the 1978 World Cup final, was unveiled at a press conference at St Mary's this morning.

He will form a new four-man coaching team alongside his fellow countryman Mark Wotte, academy coach David Hockaday and reserve team boss Stewart Henderson.

After he was introduced to the local media by chairman Rupert Lowe, he said: "I'm very proud and it's an honour to be here at Southampton Football Club.

"I'm looking forward to starting and trying to produce and achieve something here.

"When I see everything here - the stadium and the training ground - I think this club belongs to the Premiership and I'm going to do everything for that."

Poortvliet said his first priority is to find out which players from the current squad will be going and who will remain in order for him to make up his own squad.

"My first priority is to make a team because a lot of players may be going," he said.

"I will have a special eye on the young kids to see if they are capable to play - and I think they are capable.

"They told me it's like swimming. You have to go into the pool before you learn to swim and I think to learn to play on the pitch, you have to learn how to play football at a high level."

Poortvliet insisted the current financial constraints on the club, which may affect if and how he will be able to spend in the summer, will not cause any problems.

"Financially that's not a problem," he said.

"You can only put 11 people on the pitch to start a game and use three subs and I think I will find the players to do that."

Poortvliet also spoke of his delight at being able to work with Wotte. He said: "I'm very happy with Mark. We did our education together. I haven't seen him much since because he trained with different clubs, but Mark has the experience. He trained with Den Haag, Willem II in the first division, FC Utrecht in the equivalent of the English Premiership, FC Den Bosch and the Dutch Under-21s.

"We see the players of that team (the Under-21s) in the Dutch national team - Van Persie, Kuyt, Van der Vaart, Sneijder - and I think it's an honour to have Mark beside me."

Problem is 2 of them have to be full-backs (we don't have any). 2 have to be centre backs (Davies if he stays and Lancashire if he matures). And 2 forwards (only Stern can score). Plus this assumes none of them get injured, or leave. What a joke we are - just as it looked like we were making moves forward under Pearson, Lowe takes us back to square 1. Still, I suppose he has to live up to his average of 3 managers per season, so this is an early start. Watch out for fire-sales of Surman, Saffri, Lallana and Stern. Another relegation battle to look forward to! My season ticket for the last 3 years has been like a millstone around my neck, and mug that I am I renewed for this season. You can only put 11 players on the pitch. I am glad he cleared that up, as I was always wondering.

Can you put 11 quality players on the pitch to win the games? If so NP, GB, GS, GH, DJ have all failed big time in winning something here, if it is as simple as that!

Lets hope that he knows how to prepare a team who will face the brutality of this league. I am not convinced that pretty football played by boys is the way to get out of this league full of players who wil push, shove, shirt pull, tug, kick, follow through, bully, intimidate and cheat in every way possible to win. I am afraid that lots of 5-0 thumpings for us look on the cards this season.

I believe he usually only has 3-4 thousands watching his LOWER league teams in Holland. He should feel at home with the 7000 season ticket holders and the 25,000 empty seats.

Perhaps some of the 7,000 could make up the 11 on the pitch.

Perhaps the new Coach needed to point out to Saints supporteres that there are 11 players per side. The reaction of Saints fans is bitterly disappointing to say the least.

Dowayne is bang on - negativity breeds negativity.

I have supported Saints from my early days in Millbrook to my retirement home in Romsey and I have NEVER, NEVER seen such negativity towards what must be the Home Club for 99% of the people who write on this forum.

I'm older now but not senile and I want to give the new man a chance.

He must feel that he has joined a "nasty" club when he reads that he is here because he is someone's poodle or he is a monkey because a Coach gets less than a Manager.

When your old you can put in a bid for "fair play" for the new man. At the VERY least, give him a chance.

WELL "PROJECT VISION SFC" is under way or so Michael Wilde & Rupert Lowe Believe it to be such a revolutionary step that they liken it too a military plan:-"In fact, if it were a military plan, and so much thought has gone into it it could easily be, it would be called "Project Vision SFC".

What a load of total rubbish if Wilde & Lowe believe this is the way forward then like the Clive Woodward fiasco this is doomed to fail and cost the club yet more money. We are about to play total football with the kids that should be entertaining if nothing else!
I was not a Pearson fan as I believe we needed an even stronger & more expierienced manager to get us out of the Championship but this is a disaster and I would have stuck with Pearson given the choice of the two!
Can anyone find out if Season tickets already purchased can be refunded as I think this will be the last straw for a number of fans as it appears to be for me just now!

Listen to the Press conference where Jan more or less admits he has no money or ability to bring in any fresh faces that are so desperately needed but hey dont worry im sure Rupert will find another Delgado!
We got Rupert Out Before & I believe we shouldnt give him,Wilde or the new regime our support and from day 1 and given the first oppurtunity to chant for their removal we should also consider letting them play to an empty stadium if thats what it takes!
PS:- The only exception should be Clauses testimonial as he deserves and has earnt the fans respect!

What a nast vile load of people you are on here, makes me sick to the stomach to read comments from supposed saints fans, we`ve always been a nice friendly club but these days it seems a competition to come out with the most insulting comments.

Those of you not renewing fine, thats your choice but dont bring your hatred on here, if youre not renewing then youre not a fan and your comments arent welcome, these pages should be here for support and we should be welcomimg a man who has come here to try and do some good for our club, if it were a player youd at least give him a chance.

As to Pearson he didnt do a particularly good job, no better than Burley in fact, yet Crouch brought him in as a panic measure on £20,000 a week which for a club in our state is wrong, you could pay 5 players on that and thats why unfortunately he had to go, Crouch`s spending was always based on a money man coming in and anyone who spends in the hope of maybe someday winning the lottery is a fool.

Please everyone lets unite behind the club, give Lowe and the manager a chance, if we dont the only way is down and no one wants that.

Not really sure what to make of this!

If Pearson was on £20K a week (as mentioned above) then he wasn't worth it, thats for sure.

Also, Pearson wasn't really that great either.

But, the question is, which direction are we going in now?

This appointment is a surprise, make no mistake.

But, the financial situation is not a surprise at all.

Its also very true that we will NOT succeed in this division with junior or youth players alone. This appears to be the strategy.

I believe a lot of the 'better' players we have will leave - particularly those on high wages.

On balance, what is my view?

Well, I really, really hope this works out but being realistic I think we are facing another relegation scrap I'm afraid.

On a positive note, relegation scraps are at least exciting - so long as you stay up! I'd rather be chasing promotion, but its better than mid-table boredom.

Just for the record -

When I say he wasn't worth £20K a week - of course, I do appreciate that he helped us escape relegation - just! And that, perhaps, would be worth £20K a week (for a while).

With the cash at hand this was one of two options. One would of been putting faith in Nigel and his plans, the other was faith in the academy.
I know that we have alot of talented youngsters and I really hope that they realise the opportunity that they are now presented with.
If they dedicate themselves to the club and each other - success. If they think that as individuals they have "made it" and are "already worthy" - disaster.

Should make for an interesting season. Nice to see large bonuses for success.

Today I heard Pearson was on £300,000 per year, which is about £5700 per week.

With the team Pearson inherited I think he did well to get them playing better and he stabilized the team after results had plunged when Gorman and Dodd were in charge, and he managed to bring in some good loan signings to strengthen the team.

I'm sorry to see Pearson go but I understand the financial reasons for doing so, as I constantly point out on this website you can't spend money that you don't have.

After Lowe was forced out a couple of years ago costs have been allowed to escalate and the club was living beyond its means. Lowe has now returned along with Wilde to put us back on a firm financial footing, sure there is going to be pain for us fans with players being sold to boost the coffers but what can be done? Cuts have to be made otherwise Saints will fail and we will not have a club left to support.

The team will need our full support next season especially the younger players who make it into the first team. Those of you who hate Lowe, fine you continue to hate him but does it make sense to not cheer the team on?

Not hatred/vile/or wanting to make you sick to the stomach, but fact. Lowe stated in his press conference today that he was having to pick up from other peoples financial mess, excuse me, but was not Lowe chairman when we were relegated?! He also yet again tried to take credit for the Saints Academy, something that was in place way before he arrived. How long have you been a season ticket holder Shaun? Also how come you have inside knowledge as to Pearson being paid £20,000 per week? I don't think so!! I have been united behind this club for twenty-six years & paying for it!, so please don't patronise me or other SAINTS fan's! Well, I've been lost for words for the last coup;le of hours since I heard this news!

First, so sorry Nigel, you were deservedly the fans choice and while we may not all agree about players, tactics etc we know a good one when we see him. Thanks for your commitment and inspiration, I am ashamed about the way you have been treated by Wilde and Lowe who simply couldn't accept the appointment made by Crouch, that was your problem!
Second, good luck to the new team...fingers crossed etc
Third, this doesn't mean there are any grounds for optimism because:
1. these guys will have negligible knowledge of the squad other than what they are told by Wilde and Lowe
2. no experience of managing in the UK at all, nor at any sort of significant level in any other league
3. they have never worked together, yet are a team as they step thru the door
4. they are apparently the cheap option (2 for less than the price of one; if you believe that you will believe anything eg the relocation costs of two families from Netherlands to Hampshire)On the other hand perhaps they are extremely cheap ie they are available and no-one else wants them (law of supply and demand)
5. how can they make good decisions about who to keep and who to release (they probably have never even see us play - must be old videos)
6. saving money on manager(s) is a false economy
7. they can have no idea of which players have suitable talent in lower leagues that we might want to sign cheaply
8. they can have little detailed knowledge of most of the teams in the Championship, so we will have to go through another underachieving season while they find their feet (or lose their heads on Lowe's well used executioners block - has he now sacked more managers than even "deadly Doug Ellis" had at Aston Villa - most of whom he bought in anyway)
Many other thoughts come to mind too, but too many to mention!
Yet another disaster day for Saints, I fear

If, as has been claimed, NP was no £20k a week, then that would be the reason he was not kept on, not because of his ability.

When the club is broke, it has to cut running costs wherever it can, and if they can get two in for less than NP, then it makes economic sense.

I am neither pro nor anti NP, but do know that there were few fans that welcomed him to St Mary's, in fact the reverse is true. Virtually everyone wanted an experienced manager.

The two Dutch men certainly appear to have more managerial experience than Nigel, so perhaps it might be worth giving them our support. It is going to be tough enough for them, without life-long, dedicated Saints fans making life even tougher for them.

Reading the comments from Janny Boy and Wilde thing actually started to get my hopes up.
I choose what I do and am not some deferent Lowe creep. I shall not step inside St Mary’s while Lowe and Wilde hold shares in our club. You choose what you want to do and we shall see how many people buy season tickets for next season. Only stupid fools blindly follow the inept. Our anatine chairman has destroyed our club and made us a laughing stock. You may have no pride but I have.

Where to start!!
Surely the reason, or at least the main reason, we support a club, and the excitement we gain from it, is because of the endless possibilities. We start the season with hope, yes we might not have much money, but with a bit of luck, a following wind and a wily manager, we could go up. Saints have never been anything more than this, but as fans we have had this, it's called hope.
Today, I am sad to say, and all you stupid FXXXXXrs who think otherwise are sadly deluded, hope died.
We have gone for a management team proven in the Belgian third division. Chosen because it is cheaper than the one we have now and we have an owner who will actively discourage investment because he wants to run the club himself.
I struggle, really struggle to see a silver lining in all of this, because there isn't one.

Look forward, have to give them a chance now.
These two have a better history than Nigel P. He did ok and good luck to him, but now give the new guys a chance and hope they bring in a young Dutch wizard like Van Persie. COYR

I am glad to be here, but it feels like I am taking a step down from managing the mighty Helmond Sport.

A message to all true Saints fans

I have had to write this as many posters on here are making me angry and for the first time ever wishing that other saints fans would just go support another team

I am sick to death of the noisy minority on these sites with their childish threats, sanctimonious attitude, blatant hatred and ignorance of the facts. Lets look at the facts

1. pearson was no good , his record was abysmal and it was other results that kept us up
2. The slide to where we are started some time go but has accelerated since Lowe was pushed out..Crouch had NO business sense and Im afraid in football nowadays you need business acumen
3. The MAJORITY of fans want Lowe back, yes he made mistakes but the club was in a better shape with him at he helm
4. The MAJORITY of fans think this new appointment might work well
5. It was the same mindless morons on here and in the Northam end that got us in this mess
6. Real fans do NOT turn their back on a club when it is down

I have also spoken to tthe echo to seek assurances that Northam end yobs, SISA or Saints Trust DO NOT have a platform in which to spread their vile minority filth.

My response to those of you that wont renew season tickets etc is GO FIND ANOTHER TEAM AND DONT COME BACK as you are the ficklest of supporters and no longer worthy to be called a saints fan. Some people say that this is splitting the fan base in 2. I disagree, as most fans support Lowes return I say its more about getting rid of the undesirable elements in the minority of our fanbase

What a sad time for the club. no season tickets for me this season. An absolute disgrace what is happening. For all you people on here that say that is you don't agree with what is going on the you can't be a true fan. Well I am guessing that you are the type of guys I see in the office with their tongue firmly up the bosses behind! Get a life, we are all entitled to an opinion and I for one don't want to give any more of my hard earned money to this fading club.....

i can ohnostly speek for most on here by saying who the fcuk is this bloke!! another manager has beem thrown into the st mary's circus!! Pearson must feel like he's been completly shafted! ive been a loyal fan for years, but this disgusts me being a saint at the moment.
ok, you said your piece. it has however, only summed up what most of the poisonous doubters and disbelievers and hatemongers feel, and i think i can HONESTLY SPEAK for most real supporters when i say that we do all feel some injustice at the way the club is being torn apart and all the factors surrounding it. the fact is we have no cash. if i went to my IFA and told him i was struggling financially and he told me to invest all i had left in some risky dealings i'd tell him to p1ss off! why should the club do any different? please just get behind the new team and cheer them on. if it all goes tits up, surely lowe's head will be on the block?
