CLOSE: Hampshire are 174-3 (Brown 75*, Benham 70*) from 70 overs in reply to Lancashire's 357

When Michael Brown was a schoolboy, he dreamed of playing for Lancashire.

A former teammate of England fast bowler James Anderson at Burnley CC, Brown had a poster of John Crawley on his bedroom wall and went on to represent Lancashire's second XI before a lack of opportunities at Old Trafford persuaded him to move to Middlesex.

Since signing for Hampshire four years ago, Brown has steadily established himself as the county's most reliable opening batsman.

The leading run scorer for the last two seasons, Brown continued his fine form at Old Trafford with his highest score against Lancashire to ensure that Hampshire had the better of the second day, by closing on 174-3 in reply to the home side's 357.

Brown received excellent support from the recalled Chris Benham while rescuing Hampshire from a perilous 35-3 with a typically disciplined 75 not out.

He and Benham had put on an unbroken fourth-wicket stand of 139 by the close, the highest partnership of the match and Hampshire's biggest of the season behind the 190 between Crawley and Kevin Pietersen against Somerset at Taunton in May.

Brown's composed first Championship fifty against his home county followed the losses of Sean Ervine (2), Crawley (3) and Michael Lumb (9) in the first 18 overs against the new ball.

Ervine, in his first Championship opening role for three years, was out to an outstanding low, one-handed diving catch by Francois du Plessis at backward point after getting a thick edge in the first over from the excellent Sajid Mahmood.

Crawley's poor season continued when he had his off stump knocked back by a Glen Chapple off cutter after shouldering arms to his former Lancashire teammate in the fourth over after tea.

Another big first-innings deficit for Hampshire looked on the cards when Lumb, having faced 44 balls, lost concentration and edged a loose drive against Dominic Cork.

It is hoped Lumb spent the rest of the day taking note of Brown's admirable patience.

Bravery was also amongst the qualities the right-hander displayed during his four-and-a-half hours at the crease.

In the fifth over after tea, Brown ducked into a bouncer from veteran seamer Cork when he was on 45.

After a brief inspection of his helmet, Brown leg-glanced the next delivery for four to equal his highest score against Lancashire (he made 49 against his home county at the Rose Bowl two weeks ago).

And after surviving two Gary Keedy deliveries that beat his outside edge he nudged a single against the slow left armer to reach fifty for the sixth time this season from 142 balls with only his 16th scoring shot.

Brown highlighted his growing confidence with a reverse-sweep against Keedy and survived a huge appeal in attempting another with four overs of the day remaining.

Lancashire seemed convinced that Brown had top edged to Lou Vincent at gully. Brown was resolute and umpire John Steele was having none of it, sure that the ball had only struck the pad.

With Mahmood's reverse-swing a constant threat as the partnership lengthened, Brown did superbly well to dig out a yorker from the England fast bowler in the penultimate over to ensure that Hampshire survived the final session 183 behind with seven wickets still intact.

Benham has replaced the out-of-form Michael Carberry in Hampshire's top order for his second Championship appearance of the season and he responded excellently.

Confident against the short ball, he added fluency to the partnership during his unbeaten 70 (133 balls), which is his first half-century in 15 Championship innings going back to April of last year.

Benham offered only one chance, an edge between wicketkeeper Luke Sutton and first-slip Paul Horton on 65, before playing and missing at Mahmood's next ball.

That escape ensured that Hampshire enjoyed the better of a second day that began with the seamers limiting Lancashire to 357 after the home side had resumed on 261-5. Debutant Imran Tahir (5-123) completed the Lancashire innings with a well-deserved fifth wicket.

'352-9 Sajid Mahmood ensured a third batting point for Lancashire with a one-bounce four to the long-off boundary before following up with another four to deep mid-wicket'.

That sums up the season in one sentence.
Now, who is going to help me with this one?
How much longer are Hants going to persevere with Ervine? He cannot bat and he cannot bowl.
Look at the stats for this season. Pitiful.
We are a joke.

Get rid of Ervine eh?! why stop there? Chuck in Carberry (England prospect lol), Lamb, Lumb, Benham as well. No consistancy and not good enough at the basics and don't talk about the fielding. Instead of spending millions on extra seats maybe put some money into a decent cricket academy and get some aussies over to run it and then reap the benefits later.

I totally agree with you Jim.This season has been shambolic. Is this down to very poor player recruitment or coaching?
And one more point while I'm having a rant.Maybe it's not a wise idea to allow the players to smoke on the balcony. Several of them do it and it does not set a good example to the young kids waiting at the foot of the steps for their autographs.

Most of the players should take a leaf out of Tomlinson's book.
The guy has a huge amount of potential and puts his heart and soul into every delivery.

In a sentence, Hampshire can't bat for toffee, and have batted poorly for years. Our most consistent batsman over the last few years must be Nic Pothas, who is primarily a keeper: he's easily our best player in my opinion.
With our lousy batting and a team which changes from week to week as forgettable foreign players drift in and out (tho Tahir has started well I see) I really can't be bothered to walk up the road to the Rose Bowl any more.....

Hants are pants and that's all there is to it. Combination of players simply not being good enough and rubbish coaching. Forget about getting a different overseas player for each month of the season - just get a settled team of players with ability. Fact is we've been pretty rubbish since Mark Nicholas retired apart from a couple of brief spells winning the Nat West trophy (or whatever it's called now) and finishing 2nd in the Championship - both false dawns and only serving to mask the ever declining standard of play.

Ocean Village Hawk, Soton says...

But even Pothas is falling behind in the queue to become England wicketkeeper and Ambrose has hardly secured that position.
Mascarenhas is a decent player but he's not captain material. I don't begrudge him being paid handsomely for playing in the IPL but surely he has a commitment to the county as captain? Are those who threw money into his benefit buckets last year feeling a little annoyed?

I could never be annoyed with dimi he's the one player we have that i'd pay over odds to watch. It's just clear that as soon as you take away the extra overseas player we look very fragile. The Udal and Billy Taylor saga sums up the problems we have - total lack of experienced professionals (apart from JC)

A really depressing season so far, I'm not sure which is worse watching Hants or the Saints is Rod Bransgrove a friend of Rupert Lowe?

I think Hants should be given credit for enhancing the appeal of the shortened form of the game. We're the pioneers of reducing 4 days of cricket to 45 mins.

I agree with you OVH. We have too many has-beans in the side.

I can't honestly say I care too much about the results - I just enjoy the Twenty20 matches for the pints of wine you can get through while shouting helpful advice at the players!

Sean Ervine is a legend. He single-handedly won us the C&G Trophy in 2005. I won't have a bad word said against him.

Why did benham and Brown not open the batting. They were listed 1st and 2nd on the team list.

I have never been a keen cricket follower, but decided to take out membership at Hampshire this season. To say that I am disapointed is an understatement. Slapdash management prevails throughout the setup, from stadium management to the players. The team appear to be a bunch of overated show ponies, strutting aroujnd like they are world beaters. Bransgrove does replicate Rupert Lowe, i.e. "I gave you a great ground, but a cr*p tea,". I agree that Ervine is very much below par even at county cricket level, but appears to be in "the clique".

two things really will help
a:-just play Ervine as a batsman
b:-Make Micheal Brown captain
c:_GET RID OF PAUL TERRY

I know thats 3 but it made you look !!!1

Get rid of all our Kolpak and give Adams another chance along with Dawson. Lets build for next season and enjoy what is left of this. Play the kids at least they will try.
