THREE robbers who twice targeted a Hampshire jewellers were today jailed for a total of 28 years.

Elliot Burton, 38, Luke Nash, 26, and Simon Waller, 29, all from Birmingham, committed a string of robberies across England and raided Jeremy France Jewellers in Winchester in November 2005 and December 2006.

Burton was jailed for 12 years, Nash got seven and Waller received nine years.

The sentences come after the three-week trial at Birmingham Crown Court and followed a three-year police investigation, co-ordinated by Hampshire detectives.

Detective Inspector Frances Payne said: "These sentences are the result of an extensive investigation led by Hampshire Constabulary which covered eight police force areas over a three year period.

"These results should stand as a stark warning to anyone intent on committing criminal activity that we are relentless in our determination to prosecute, secure a conviction and a prison sentence."

It always baffles me why the collective sentence is quoted. It's meaningless. So between them, they get 28 years. What does that tell us about the actual sentence? Diddley, that's what

Ridiculous - they would have got less for killing someone. The law seems to come down harder if the value of the crime is high (in monetary terms) irrespective fo the physical element.

Of course it does, Holly. Look at the "canoe liar" case - 6+ years each, for what? Defrauding an insurance company basically. Wow. What a dangerous couple they are, eh

The justice system here sucks. The current wisdom is, if you can't pay your council tax, go out and steal the money to pay it, because you'll get a lesser sentence for theft than for non-payment. Ridiculous
