Lallana wants to get even

ADAM LALLANA says Saints will be looking for a bit of revenge when they take on Birmingham in the Carling Cup tonight.

Saints put in a good performance ten days ago when they faced the Blues in the Championship, also at St Mary's, but came away from the game on the wrong end of a 2-1 scoreline.

On that occasion Saints took a deserved lead just before half time but Birmingham's strength in depth told in the second half with former Saints striker Kevin Phillips coming off the bench to score what proved to be the winner.

Jan Poortvliet's young squad have faced a steep learning curve so far this season but go into this second round clash at St Mary's on the back of their first league win of the season, an excellent 1-0 victory at Derby.

Lallana, who scored the goal to give Saints their first three points of the season (although the Press Association awarded it to teammate David McGoldrick), views the Blues and the Rams in a similar way and is hoping his side can make it two wins on the bounce in all competitions tonight.

He said: "Because we did so well against them in the first game we just want to get a bit of revenge against them now and get through to the next round where we might draw a Premiership team.

"Derby are similar in the fact that they've just come down so I don't think we're afraid of anyone."

Lallana believes Saints have learnt a host of valuable lessons in their opening three league games this season.

Some of those lessons, such as the one against Birmingham, have at times felt hard to take, but the attacking midfielder reckons it will stand his team in good stead this time out.

"We just want to play our own game and we think we can win every game," said Lallana, whose side also had to stomach conceding a late goal at Cardiff to rob them of a point on the opening day of the Championship season.

"We didn't see the first Birmingham game out in the second half, but we did do on Saturday so it shows that we're learning, as a team and individually."

It was a pity Lallana was injured for much of last season as he was starting to show great potential. The vibes coming out the of club are encouraging, let's keep it going.

All this re-newed optimism cracks me up. Conceded a last minute goal in the first game and lost. Threw away a second half goal lead at home in second game and lost. Oh but we did manage to beat Derby who haven't won a game since late 2007!!! Same old sh1t, different season.

It's all very well looking back on games gone by but we have just won a game that could have been a big banana skin so get behind the lads tonight and for the rest of the season!!

Nobody said it would be easy but us fans need to do our bit - how can we expect the players to give 100% if we're gonna slate them anyway?

should not play any first team players at all tonite.....last thing saints need is a run in this cup.........they need to concentrate on the league and the league only..........they aint gonna win this cup.......best off out of it...............if llama want to get his own back do it in the return fixture in the league.......3 point is the best remedy for this one

Nice to see we can rely on your support then at a time the Club needs any additional revenue it can get. A good cup run will help boost confidence and the bank balance and if we get a good Premiership team down to SMS, it will ensure a packed house.
The more money we can attract, the less the Board have to sell to balance the books. That is why any Cup run is essential for the Club.

Keep the team together, there isn't better training than playing in a competitive situation. If you've seen the lads play then you can see the progress being made. Our great club is undergoing financial stabalisation at the moment, so we need to do well in as many copetitions as possible and the experience will do the lads the world of good. The older memebers of the team now need to sort their lives out, do they want it or not? Support the boys and the club tonight, ticket prices are well down in price. So stop the doom and gloom and allow your voice to be heard loud and clear in a more positive way. COYR

Fair play to you Kate but as my name suggests i'm just being realistic. I am actually a Saints fan and have been for 30 years. I promised myself after last season that i wouldn't get my hopes up this year but after watching Claus's testimonial i was pleasantly surprised so went to the Birmingham game with renewed optimism only to have it knocked out of me yet again. So the optimist will predict play-offs this year and the realist will predict a relegation struggle - lets see who's right come May 08??!!!

I know what you are saying but the clear difference between our start this year and how we've looked previously is that we are now good to watch! If we have players who can keep and pass the ball we'll be stronger in the last 10 mins than the old days where we could only kick it up field and scrap for our lives. Ofcourse, a keeper who can't catch and only 1 dominant defender in the air means we'll always be susceptible to the late onslaught and the long ball.

That said, the future looks bright..

Come on lads! Let's beat the Blues tonight and give ourselves a run in a cup. Nothing breeds confidence like winning matches!

I think reality man had better forget his realistic side, it doesn't even know what year he's in, I think may '08 has gone, taking talk of relegation with it. This young side will win more games than they lose so why not start pulling together and who knows..we might even silence all the sceptics come MAY'09

Alas, you may be right. I think they are the best team in the championship so even if we don't get the result we want tonight, let's not be too despondent. We look a good side and with players we can improve vastly in the months and years to come. Compare that to even last year where we were a horrible team full of players past their peak (if they had one).

The side has a bit of confidence about it now and tonight is a great chance to show we've learnt from the last meeting. It's a bonus game, if you like.

Saturday against Blackpool will tell us more about how the side is developing. That is a "should win"....

I guess you've seen a lot more than I have, only being a fan for the last few years but compare the way the team played last year to the way they're playing now, I think that's a small reason for some hope for the remainder of the season.

I'm hoping for somewhere inbetween play-offs and a relegation battle - I think mid table obscurity would be a welcome finish this season. And although I hate to say it, even if we did get to the play-offs and got promoted, I really don't think the squad will be ready yet.

But there's a long way to go before then and lots of ups and downs I'm sure! Meantime I'm looking forward to tonight! COYR!!

You are so negative! Maybe because of your shrivelled genitalia or because your last date involved you and your mum eating Pizza in your bedroom. Actually, I'm envious of that. I'd love to have a date in your mums bedroom!

You're right we have been playing really well but i get my hopes up every season only to get them knocked down again.
