Schools want break from Southampton council control

FOUR Southampton schools have launched a bid to break away from council control in a move they claim will drive up standards.

Chamberlayne College for the Arts is spearheading the move with its feeder schools Weston Park Junior School, Weston Park Infant School and Weston Shore Infant School.

Staff hope the change in status will give them more independence and mean children leave better qualified.

But a union has warned that the moved was being rushed, standards would not necessarily improve and governors would become less democratically accountable.

If given trust status the schools would manage their own land and buildings, employ their own staff and set their own admission arrangements.

Well, the Unions are against it. Must be a good idea then.

Southampton LEA has a track record for delivering poor education, especially at secondary level. I can fully understand why an underperforming school like Chamberlayne would consider the move.

leaving the lea isnt always a good idea tho, just look at the oasis sites. there were no riots in the schools prior to that!!

Hang on a minute.
The School Unions are full of ...er... Teachers. They know about ...wait for it....their workplace. They think its wrong and rightly are opposed to it. Why come out with such an inane, unintelligent comment?

Oh I forgot. You are just anti union and think the employers know best.

I'm sure bright pupils at schools like Woodlands, Chamberlayne and Cantell would relish being at schools where they might actually learn something, rather than having their time wasted by the teachers having to deal with disruptive pupils.

Reports say that dire schools like Bellemoor have improved since opting out of the LEA and since Ruth Johnson left Oasis Mayfield things have settled down there too.

Schools exist solely to educate children, if they didn't exist teachers would have to do other jobs. Kids in Southampton deserve much better schools on a par with those offered in Hampshire like Kings, Romsey and Thornden

Condorman, what has Cantell and Woodlands got to do with the story above?

Bellemoor? What reports? The School never opted out of the LEA.

Don't be so certain on Oasis Mayfield's current situation.

Get your facts right before you spout your nonsense.

As for opting out. It's a dangerous route to follow. Look at what happened with Woolston and Grove Park.
