City schools in the red

SOUTHAMPTON City Council bosses have agreed to let seven schools go into the red by nearly £500,000 in total this year.

Top of the budget deficit list is St George Catholic College, which has a planned overdraft of £145,000, and Chamberlayne College of the Arts, which looks like it will be £115,000 in the red.

Meanwhile deficit budgets have also been approved for Redbridge Community School (£61,000), Holy Family Catholic Primary (£65,000), Townhill Infant (£8,000), St Monica Infant (£23,000) and Sinclair Primary (£52,000).

Southampton’s education boss Clive Webster, told Southampton City Council’s Cabinet that deficit budgets were only offered if schools had “robust plans” to get back in balance.

He said: “They reflect in reality that there are fluctuations with pupil numbers and staffing decisions are made in advance of this.”
