Oasis Academy single-site operation is brought forward by two years

The Oaklands site The Oaklands site

A FLAGSHIP Southampton academy is to merge on to a single site two years early because of a drop in pupil numbers, the Daily Echo can reveal.

Shifting to a single site will mean jobs are cut at the city’s Oasis Academy Lord’s Hill.

But last night bosses would not say how many staff could be made redundant.

The cost-cutting move comes in response to lower student numbers, but academy chiefs insist it will make it easier for pupils and teachers currently working on sites a mile apart.

I trust the English grammar being taught to your child, will be better than your own.

Hulla Baloo - Maybe you should brush up on your punctuation before you start pointing out other people's mistakes. You don't need the comma in your sentence.

my daughter goes to the grove park site and is doing brilliantly, she is a hardworking child and likes school, her grades have improved since going there, i think if a child wants to learn they will no matter what the school is like, the teachers there are helpful and listen to her and ive never had any problems speaking to a certain teacher, i think it just depends on the child as to whether or not they get on at the school or not!

Well said

Maybe you should apply for a job at one of these Oasis schools, then, quite possibly our children would get the education they deserve.

I have heard nothing but complaints about these two learning institutions, I think Oasis should have their contracts cancelled and these school returned to be run by new head teachers and governors.

Its funny that they say it WILL be built on a new site. Currently there is massive opposition to this, as it is on public open space at four acres. This just shows that Oasis are only interested in the Oaklands site to build houses on, and NOT about the education of children. My suggestion, do everything you can to fight this. Oasis may be a church run organisation but they seem to be run by money mad businessmen and not child concerned educators which is what we want for our children!

and to build on millbrook school, (what use to be 2 separate schools. brownhill girls school & green lane boys school).
the church is a business the worlds biggest.
they are also ignoring that the population drop/slow down has ended and is on the increase again, in about 5 to 10 years time they will run out off room in the schools due to this increase in the population

Oasis hasn't changed much then!

I am not in the least surprised at what has happened. I was against the Oasis deal from the start (and said so then). This is precisely the sort of thing that happens when you hand over education to be run by private companies. They will want to merge sites, their focus is not necessarily purely educational and I don't like the Church influence behind it all either. Best to end the deal if at all possible.

I am an old Oaklands student, and my brother is a current. I left 2 years before the change, and my brother had been there a year before it changed, and he has told me how its gone down hill even more than Oaklands was.

I hope it fails, we all voted against this but once again our opinion doesn't count.

So thats why schools fail, because all all the pupils are bad?? When I was at school the results dipped drastically because of internal strife (think Rupert Lowe at the helm) but with a change in management they soon recovered. Theres only so far you can go with individualism. You might as well say, well lets cut our spending on education to a bare minimum and the pupils will get on if they want to.

there are at least 4 schools in southampton that had worse exam results than oasis, what im saying is if there are good teachers in schools and pupils willing to learn then it will work, too many parents dont discipline their children and end up with naughty kids who disrupt others this was a problem even when i was at school, the school has improved considerably since mr toland took over and i think people need to give the school a chance, chamberlayne and woodlands are much worse schools but i dont hear anybody harping on about them??!!

very true. It amazes me how disgruntled parents moan about schools, I wonder how many are parents of unruly pupils? It's because many child have little support at home that they do so badly in school. Good parents support their children and their school.

and theres another reason why not to have large schools, smaller schools smaller classes are best. more control in the class room, so stop closing down schools and just open up smaller schools, you find this be good for sports also, large schools only limit the number that can take part at sports competition between schools.

I am guessing you moved to turkey as you had no friends here and thought that people there would like you but once they had realised you are a universal male bird no one would talk to you! stfu and rtfm of life richard head

I've heard that Oasis Lordshill have under 90 kids due to start year 7 in September (as against over 250 at successful schools a few miles to the North).
They cannot fill either of their existing buildings let alone a new one.
And who is going to speculatively buy EITHER of those sites for housing when the Ordnance Survey site will meet demand for years to come.
Being Oasis back under council control. Save the big field.

The best way forward for Southampton is to have high achieving 'super schools' like Wildern, Romsey, Mountbatten and Kings. At the moment only Bitterne Park is anywhere close to getting there. Consider also that Oasis Lordshill is competing with Redbridge, Regents Park and Upper Shirley High for pupils.
Currently Southampton schools are not meeting the needs of high achieving pupils, I hope with a change of Government more emphasis should be placed on the able.

Oasis Academy Mayfield ( woolston school merged with grove) I left the school last summer, and was studying for my exams while the schools merged. I agree that the level of teaching was better when it was woolston, and the merge was disruptive, but i do however believe the teachers did try their hardest with my year group. Sure i misbehaved alot and so did all of my friends, but that was because we knew we could get away with it, we got away with alot without punishment so when we were bored, we'd misbehave. The teachers did all persist with encouraging us to do well and helping us with extra revision sessions and they tried to not disrupt our learning and i still managed to come out of a **** school with good grades, you can't just blame the school however poor it may be it's also down to the kids and their efforts. Although, that is a terrible school.

I though that under the Tories you were going to start up your own school due to the past failures............
....how is it coming along ??????

Hi Southy,

Just wanted to catch up on our conversation from yesterday when I asked you why you hadn't placed a bet on your statement about our new government failing within a year. I quote "it will collapse before the end of the year".

You see everybody, Southy insists that everything he says is correct, so I just wanted to see if he could back his words up with some actions.

Southy, you said the odds of this bet were rubbish - but surely if you know you are going to be right then you will win. Even if the odds are 1/1, you'll still win 100 squid for every 100 squid you bet on it.

No brainer????

You also questioned why I suggested that you move out of Redbridge with all your money (which you will win from your bet). Well, I can't see any reason why you would want to stay. It's not exactly Poole Harbour is it!

the odds are worse than 1-1 its about 1-30 odds on favourite, so just to get an extra £1 back you will need to put down, £30 plus the tax whitch is 10p for every £1, you will be out off pocket, thats why the bookies have not open a bets up on it for less than 2 half years, but have done for after the 2 half years, this is according to a friend that works in the betting shop up on the hill.
no brainer is right, no one going to bet on odds where you will be out of pocket
poole harbour a nice place to visit, only problem is the wealthy the very rich have push the locals away from the water

Thereby creating problems for teachers and other pupils. You are brave to come on here and write that - but very selfish when at school.
