Councillors support Oasis Academy Mayfield

COUNCILLORS have enthusiastically approved plans to rebuild Oasis Academy Mayfield.

Southampton City Council’s planning committee said the £15m proposals are “good news for the city”.

They yesterday voted unanimously to support an application to rebuild most of the academy’s site at The Grove, Sholing, providing a school for 900 pupils. Despite doubts hanging over the scheme because of a Government review of school building projects, academy bosses, the council and developers Carillion remain confident of securing funding.

The plans will see new vehicle access added to the site from Ashley Crescent, more sporting facilities and state-of-the-art classrooms and learning areas.

What more important is for students to feel they are getting a good education at this academy, not the case at the moment.

Staff morale is low and many spend too much time on the sick or even leave, thus leaving student with stand in teachers who know nothing about the subject they are teaching.

Councillors need to wake up first and deal with more important problems than worry about a building project. Webster it's about time you stood up to your negligence and take reposibility to correct it... if not, leave

Webster won't go on his gold plated salary/pension as he knows he'd never do better anywhere else. The guy has overseen a massive decline in Southampton's educational standards but he refuses to take the bull by the horns and sort it out.

A lot of these problems are because the school is on 2 sites.

How can a state of the art building and the whole school being under 1 roof be a bad thing? If morale is the problem then surely this will raise it.

Bad and lazy teachers should be weeded out in any school. The academy status that Mayfield has will hopefully give them more power over who they employ.
