New primary plan unveiled for Winchester

New primary plan unveiled New primary plan unveiled

PLANS for a pioneering new school to tackle a shortage of places have been unveiled by education chiefs.

Hampshire County Council has identified a potential site for a two-form entry primary in Winchester.

The new school would be on the site of Rotherly boarding house at The Westgate School in Fulflood.

It means Westgate, currently a secondary, would become a school for pupils aged four to 16 – the first Hampshirerun combined primary and secondary school.

The council said a separate plan to close the girls’ boarding house at Rotherly, which also houses a nursery school, had created the opportunity to site a primary there.

If it gets the go-ahead, the new school would open its doors to the first reception pupils in September 2014.

The council is preparing to launch a public consultation on the proposals next month.

It is not yet known if Rotherly would be bulldozed to make way for the new primary or if the existing buildings would be refurbished.
