A SOUTHAMPTON private school has bought out a private Hampshire prep school.

Bosses at King Edward VI School say the purchase of Stroud School in Romsey is “an opportunity to enhance the education of children between the ages of three and 18 years”.

Stroud, which was founded in 1926, has around 320 children on roll for the start of next year, and currently sends an average of 24 pupils to the 450-year-old King Edward’s, which offers education from 11-year-old to 18.

Shrewd move, KES guaranteeing at least 24 kids per year from the feeder school. Shame not everyone has access to it.

Access to what? A higher standard of education based on income? The whole concept of private education is based on restricted access and elitism.

Bit puzzling that they've got the money to do this since they're a registered charity and consequently get all sorts of tax breaks for their "charitable purpose"... It's incredible that in these days of public spending cutbacks, the Charity Commission still accepts providing an education purely to bright kids who pass the entrance exam and have affluent parents as a valid charitable aim!
