Unversity extension bid Unversity extension bid

A UNIVERSITY facility which has worked with Formula 1 motorsport and the Great Britain Olympic cycling team wants to build a two-storey extension.

Southampton University bosses want to add to The RJ Mitchell wind tunnel building at the Highfield campus to boost its trailblazing capability in testing aerodynamics.

The extension will include a separate visitors’ viewing gallery, a new changing room for people entering the test bed and space for presentations and exhibitions.

Planners will decide whether to give the go ahead on a provisional date of September 10.

Aren't there enough empty buildings already in the city they can utilise instead of building more bricks and mortar?

A wind tunnel with a viewing gallery is a rather specialised facility. It's probably more cost effective to built it than to try to adapt an existing building, plus the costs of having staff need to frequently travel between the main campus and a building off-campus.
