HAMPSHIRE and Southampton schools are being urged to sign up to take advantage of free cinema trips for pupils during next month’s National Schools Film Week.

The annual festival, which last year saw nearly half a million students and teachers attend screenings around the country as part of the scheme, which is designed to support the in-class curriculum.

Southampton’s Harbour Lights, Odeon and Cineworld cinemas will all be taking part in the event between October 15 and 26, showing new and recent films including War Horse , Hugo , The Artist , Brave and The Muppets , pictured.

Stephanie Fenner, head of social sciences at The Burgate School in Fordingbridge , said: “It encourages students to view films that perhaps they would not independently access, this is often quite thought-provoking.

“It is an event that students see as a treat and it brings groups of different people together.”
