It wasn’t just Jack and Jill who went up the hill - it was also Suzie, Anne, Paul, Tony and dozens of other Southampton kids.
The theme of Bitterne Carnival on June 15, 1996, was nursery rhymes, so many local children dressed up in colourful garb to impersonate their favourite characters.
All the king’s horses and all the king’s men would have had difficulty stopping the children from walking the route through Bitterne precinct - and more importantly - from having a good time.
A mass of Humpty Dumpties and Little Miss Muffets were led by a Boy’s Brigade Band and attracted its biggest crowd, with both participants and spectators enjoying the glorious sunshine.
