THE Daily Echo ventures back 50 years and takes a look at life in February 1968 – through pictures taken at the time.

It was the month when Great Britain and Northern Ireland competed in the Winter Olympics in Grenoble, France.

Nearly 100 Indians and Pakistanis arrived in Britain from Kenya on February 4, after being forced out by increasingly draconian immigration laws. That took the total amount of Asians who arrived in Britain from Kenya to 1,500.

On February 14 Northampton was designated as a New Town. The Wilson government planned to double its size and population by 1980.

Later in the month the pulsar was first discovered by astronomer Jocelyn Bell Burnell, and a fire at the Shelton Mental Hospital, Shrewsbury, killed 21 patients.

The Mighty Quinn by Manfred Mann was a popular song, many people were reading The

Confessions of Nat Turner by William Styron, and the average wage was a little over £20 per week.
