LOVE had the world in motion as England reached the semi-final of the World Cup in 1990.
Italia '90s semi-final saw the England squad battled against all odds in a performance which equalled that of their higher seeded rivals West Germany.
West Germany took the lead on the 60-minute mark when Andreas Brehme’s shot on goal was heavily deflected by Paul Parker, sending it into the net.
England reacted and, with just ten minutes on the clock , Gary Lineker equalised and forced extra time.
No goals could be mustered by either team during extra time, so England faced West Germany in a penalty shoot-out. West Germany’s reputation for being clinical at penalties was huge.
After unsuccessful penalties taken by Stuart Pearce and Chris Waddle, the game ended 4-3 in West Germany’s favour, a score that took them through to the final with Argentina, a game which they won.
More than 60 regulars huddled around the television in The Royal Oak, Lodge Road, as they experienced the gut-wrenching roller-coaster of a match.
