FLIPPIN’ ECK! It’s that time of year again when the designated chef of the household will tonight get to grips with flour, eggs and milk, while someone else makes a last minute dash to the shops to grab a squeezy lemon!

Pancakes are eaten on Shrove Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday and the start of the observation of Lent by Christians in the run-up to Easter.

Households traditionally use up all the rich foods in their larders as eggs, sugar and butter are not allowed to be eaten during this time of 40 days of fasting.

These ingredients were used to make pancakes.

Today we celebrate Shrove Tuesday by feasting on pancakes before making a commitment to give up something for 40 days and 40 nights, popular choices being chocolate or alcohol.

In honour of our great pancake traditions Hampshire Heritage has tossed open the archive and served up a tasty selection of some wacky racers having a flipping good time at pancake races from years gone by.
