THIS aerial photograph taken in the early 1960s shows the first stages of the new Technical College being built at East Park Terrace, Southampton.
Two large excavations carved deep into the site can also be seen highlighted by arrows in the photographs. The large hole on the left would go onto become the basement of the main eight-storey college block, while the hole on the right was the excavation for the 200ft-long wave-testing tank under the workshop area, which is still in use today at Solent University.
The whole of the East Park-terrace and New-road site is shown in this photograph. The landmarks that are easy to pick out in this are the central fire station (top centre) and left, the new health centre building that was going up at the time (which has since been demolished and now no longer exists).
In the bottom left-hand corner are the bowling green and hard tennis courts in East Park.
