On Tuesday we saw people scoot around Romsey on beds, go-karts and wheelbarrows, while tomorrow we have the opportunity to see brightly decorated floats wind their way through the market town’s centre.

With Romsey Carnival 2017 well under way, the Southern Daily Echo takes a look at the fun had by participants and spectators in 1983.

Two bed races were laid on by the Romsey Carnival committee on July 26, 1983 – a men’s race, and a girls’ team with a male passenger.

Fifteen teams took place in the men’s race, with four members of Romsey Rugby Club emerging as the triumphant team.

First home in the brand-new girls’ race were Romsey School pupils Michelle Radford, Gillian Reid, Joanne Starbuck and Veronica Saunton. They pushed Anthony Radford

while dressed in Egyptian clothing.

The hour-long procession the following weekend was bathed in glorious sunshine, resulting in a turnout of thousands of people.

It was headed by Romsey firemen who won one of the top prizes for the miniature fire engine they built for the bed race earlier in the week.

An all-woman construction company, nursery rhymes, BMX riders, and a Hawaiian luau were among the themes of the 25 floats.
