FRENZIED Cup tie excitement gripped Southampton back in January 1947 ahead of the Saints’ FA Cup match with Bury at The Dell.
According to the Echo reports of the time it was the younger generation who appeared to be getting the biggest “kick” at the prospect of watching their heroes take on the Lancashire side, as a strong contingent of Southampton schoolboys lined up outside The Dell in the morning, with each young fan proudly wearing a red and white rosette and clutching a haversack containing sandwiches and bottle of pop.
Once inside The Dell the youngsters and the rest of the red and white army who turned out in force to cheers on the Saints were not disappointed.
The crowd was entertained to a thrilling afternoon of cup tie football at its finest, with Saints centre forward George Lewis the star of the show on the day.
The Saints scored the first goal through Jack Bradley, before George Lewis and Billy Bevis netted to make the score 3-1 to the Saints at the interval.
The Saints continued to impress in the second half with Lewis scoring another two goals to secure his hat trick and round off an emphatic 5-1 win for the Saints.
