ROAD travel by horse and cart of pony-trap was a hot and dusty business in the summers of yesteryear.

Wayside pubs like the Old Swan here, at Bursledon, provided the necessary lubricant for dry throats, and opening hours were decidedly more liberal than today.

A passing point of sartorial interest is that each of the men in this picture sports either a cap or a straw boater and wears a jacket or a waistcoat, notwithstanding what appears to be a very warm summer’s day.

The evidence suggests the picture was taken at some point between about 1900 and 1914.
