More than 200 youngsters came together to “Face The Challenge” on Saturday February 6, 1982.
Southampton District of Methodist Association of Youth Clubs organised a weekend of challenges in which young people aged between 14 and 18 took part in demanding activities.
There was a wide variety of challenges, including a sponsored swim and car cleaning – all to raise money for the Itchen South District Scout Camp Site.
A group of youth club members called in at Southampton Zoo where they groomed Twiggy the llama, while some met the Army in Marchwood.
Thirty of the youth club members experienced the rigours of firemen’s training with the Hampshire Fire Brigade in Redbridge.
After a demonstration by four members of Green Watch, the youngsters tried their hand at the firefighting drill. There was a disco in the evening, including a dance contest. On Sunday there was a parade followed by a church service, with a film in the afternoon.
