Tributes paid to last Titanic survivor, Millvina Dean

A TRIBUTE to Millvina Dean could take pride of place in Southampton’s proposed Titanic museum.

Southampton City Council’s leisure and heritage boss made the pledge as he paid tribute to the city’s last link to the disaster.

Councillor John Hannides said the £28m attraction would tell the story of the hundreds of Southampton residents who perished on April 14, 1912.

“I would like to think the museum itself will be a dedication to the people like Millvina and other local residents whose lives were affected by the Titanic,” the Cabinet member for leisure, culture and heritage said.

“But in recognition of Millvina Dean, a local person who was the last surviving passenger on Titanic, I would like to think that we would be able to recognise her in some way within the museum.”

Cllr Hannides said she would also have a distinguished place in future commemoration events and her links with Southampton and the Titanic would not be forgotten.

“It is too early to say what type of tribute there could be, but if we were successful in taking plans for the museum forward then we will be sure to engage with residents on this,” he added.

Roger Hardingham, publisher of Titanic: The Last Survivor, The Life Story of Millvina Dean, said the museum would be a suitable location for a tribute.

Mr Hardingham, who last spoke to Millvina two weeks ago, said: “At the very least I would like to see something happen in the new museum.

“Whether it is a bust or a plaque, I would like to see Millvina remembered in Southampton.”

Her father died on Titanic... she was the youngest survivor and the oldest living survivor - what more do you want? How is that a tenousous link??? SHE WAS ON THE SHIP.

many people in southampton had members of their family die on the ship. The point is that she was 9 weeks old and didnt have any memory of the ship at all. THAT IS WHY IT IS TENUOUS. (not sure what tenousous means)

No jealousy here, I say well done to the lady, she has dined out on her curiosity value for many years, considering she would have no first hand memory of the actual events.

There are many families with much stronger ties to the ship that deserve a mention before a "bust or plaque" is considered for her.

Totally agree. Her brother was also saved from the ship and he didn't make a lifelong living out of his "experiences" as she did.
It is the third class passengers who were locked below who should have a plaque, if anyone.

Just goes to show what sort of person you are. That statement says a great deal about you. Are you a politician by any chance, milking the expenses system?

Maybe people should let Malvina rest in peace now!! she has gave alot of her time to others all her life and so what if she was only 9 weeks old - herself and her family still suffered a loss in their lives. If somebody else was the last survivor then it would be them getting a tribute.Have some respect!!!!!!!

There have been many pathetic negative posts over this lady for years.

She was the last living link with this tragedy that deeply affected Southampton with the loss of so many local lives.

She lost a father and surely some degree of compassion should enter the equation?

I have no problem with Millvina and a lifetime of real survival - she had a long life and helped to keep the memory of that tragic night alive.

I'm usually cynical on many counts but not this one.

God Rest Her Soul - it's human nature to hold onto the last remnants of a past event and if Millvina was that then a few celebratory dinners and overseas visits shouldn't be reason to let petty jealousy's surface. More to the point in this case is what the hell is going to be done with this £28 million. Has anyone thought to consider contact James Cameron for this project? It needs a man with his vision at the helm or at least the people he works with to add some sparkle to what I fear will be another disaster. Southampton could do with the PR that brings as well.
