Weekly heritage photo puzzle

Recognise this street, pictured in 1964? Recognise this street, pictured in 1964?

In our weekly heritage puzzle, we want to know if you can identify this street.

Still a major road in Southampton, it has changed beyond all recognition since this photograph was taken in 1964.

Most of the buildings are still there but you probably won't recognise them.

You can see a bigger version of this photograph on our Facebook page as well as the suggestions being offered by other readers, and previous mystery photos.

To find out if you're right, pick up a copy of today's Southern Daily Echo.

I think its Portswood Rd looking towards Bevois Valley. The shop with door on the corner looks familiar.

Close to where my grandmother lived anyway.

I think it is St Mary's Road, the British Gas building is now opposite these shops.

it looks like the road in St Denys, coming from Portswood to Bitterne, Priory Rd would be on the right, where the white building is, on the opposite side would be what is now St Denys Cons club.

Bevois Valley, that big white building at the back is now a pub? opposite the car place that has the mini sticking out of the wall. I'm useless with road names!

It's Portswood Road looking towards Bevois Valley. That white building on the corner at the end is now Mango's.

My thoughts exactly, couldn't remember the name of the bar/restaurant.
I think that street must be Rigby Rd behind Spear Rd (and my grandmothers).

It's that street in Yorkshire where they filmed the Hovis advert

Haven’t seen the enlarged picture, but it looks like St Mary’s Road near its junction with Onslow Road. White building may be the one on the corner of Bellevue Terrace and Onslow Road
.
But I wonder who that VW Beetle belonged to. There were hardly any Beetles around in 1964.

I can see previous contributors are right, it is St Mary's Road opposite British Gas. It looks quiet though. Does anyone know if St Mary's Road was considered rough, or was on the fringes of a red light area back in 1964?

Hmmmm.. on first glance thought it was Bevois Valley Road, opposite 'Helibeds', but now I think it might be up nearer to where the Jackpot Cafe used to be on Porstwood Rd...? Good pic tho!

If the Hovis advert was filmed in Dorset it can't the street in Yorkshire, for my second guess.

Is it the street in Yorkshire where they filmed Open all Hours, famously starring David Delboy Jason and Ronnie Barker.

Geography is not my strong point, however if Shaftesbury is in Dorset is there is no need for a fight.

I assuming both my guess are wrong, so I will have one more guess.

Here goes,,,,,is it the Yorkshire street were they filmed The Last Of The Summer Wine.

It has be that street, if you look closely you can see Nora Batty in the window of the shop next to the sign.

You are absolutely correct mastershot, No. 96 was indeed Moxhams (TV, radio and cine specialists. Continuing up on that (east) side was No. 95 Huttons fruiterers, No. 94 Tidburys studios- photographers, No. 93 International charity shop, No. 92 Lundstroms pie shop, No.91 Scotts confectioners, No. 90 Westons (later Wilkins) bakers, No. 89 Newtown Inn, on the corner of Onslow Road.
On the opposite corner at that junction with Bellevue Terrace (the three storey building) was No. 1 Onslow Road , David Depoix's furniture shop, later Bamboo Jungle.
Moxhams was closed down at the time of the photograph, later became Grosvenor Signs.

Sounds like someone has a couple of old copies of Kelly's directory.
.
.
And onto the totally irrelevant;
The Music used in the Hovis ad was Dvorak's Symphony No9, 'From the New World' which he wrote in America.
