The Daily Echo's weekly heritage photograph puzzle

Which street is this, pictured in 1940? Which street is this, pictured in 1940?

In our weekly heritage puzzle, we want to know if you can identify this street.

It has changed immensely since this photo was taken in 1940, but can you pin-point it?

You can see a bigger version of this photograph on our Facebook page as well as the suggestions being offered by other readers, and previous mystery photos.

To find out if you're right, pick up a copy of today's Southern Daily Echo.

• Congratulations to those who correctly identified last week's photo as St. Mary's Road, Southampton. The shops are now the site of the Kaos nightclub.

I have no idea what the street is, but notice that, despite the post war austerity that must have existed at the time, they are NO POT HOLES!in the road. In those days few could afford to run the vehicles that make them.

It is above bar as, if you look carefully you can see the bargate in the background. The small shop in the right fore ground is Parkhouse and Wyatt. That's my answer.

In Above Bar, looking North towards New Rd.

I agree that P&W (where it still is) is observable, but that can't be the Bargate in the background. That would only be seen looking southwards.
Anyone know what that could be in the distance?

Above Bar Street appears to be corect. If you look on Google Street View you will see the roof line of the red brick building on the left is still almost identical and there's still a park opposite, which is Palmerston Park.

It's Above Bar with the Prudential buildings on the left and looking North.

Halfords Cycle Co Ltd was No. 92 Above Bar Street, the gap between there and No. 96 (W.L. Parkhouse and Son) was W.H. Smith newsagency(behind the Standard 10 car). Continuing northwards behind the fencing adjacent to Palmerston Park were the sites of the N0. 98 the Classic cinema and No's 102 - 108 Smith Bradbeer and Co. who later relocated to New Milton. Continuing again , after the plane trees on the perimeter of the park and the junction of New Road, the taller building is No. 120 Above Bar Street which was the Co-operative Permanent Building Society.
On the opposite side (west) the facade of Prudential Buildings can be seen.

I think it's taken from where the bird aviary used to be, looking back towards where C&A was.

1940 was not post war, it had just started. The cars have got their headlight hoods fitted, the blackout was on. The building on the left has been hit and the POT-HOLES were soon to appear, b****y great big ones. That car on the right is a Standard 12 if i'm not mistaken, My first car was the 1938 Flying ten model. I had to pay £135 for it in 1957 the tyres were as bald as a Coot but they were tyres and that's all that mattered The price when new about £65.

The former Smith Bradbeer store was levelled by a direct hit on 23rd November 1940. In the photo the site is shown behind fencing immediately before the park. I suspect this was taken in early 1941. Smith Bradbeer resumed trading only two weeks after the bombing re-locating to Shirley and New Milton with further stores opening later in Romsey and Eastleigh.

I'm proud to say I got it right this time, although got the wrong end of Above Bar, I thought it was outside Goblets looking towards the Bargate.

And I know it’s Above Bar because I’ve seen today’s Echo.
