Weekly Hampshire Heritage photograph mystery

Weekly heritage photo mystery Weekly heritage photo mystery

In our weekly heritage puzzle, we want to know if you can identify this street.

Some things have hardly changed since the photo was taken in 1952, yet others are radically different - but you may not notice straight away.

You can see a bigger version of this photograph on our Facebook page as well as the suggestions being offered by other readers, and previous mystery photos.

To find out if you're right, pick up a copy of today's Southern Daily Echo.

• Congratulations to those who correctly identified last week's photo as Above Bar Street, Southampton. The buildings in the centre are now the site of the Que Pasa bar.

On the left is the corner of Civic Centre Road and Above Bar Street looking Northwards. The buildings on the left are Forum Buildings, starting with Fifty Shilling Tailors (Prices Ltd), J. Purser jewellers, Loraine confectioners and the Forum cinema.
On the right side are Basticks outfitters, and Manfield and Saxone, both shoeshops.

This one's easy as I was driving the bus.

These were different times to today, it was quite common back then for people to stand on street corners for hours on end, pointlessly staring into space.

I agree these photos are too easy, we need some from about the 1880's when I used to sit in my pram gawking at the old trams.

Foyes Corner looking north up into Shirley. The woman stood on the corner behind the man is my Auntie Doris and she's smoking a Woodbine.

Above Bar Street. One the right is Woodhouse, the furniture store. In the distance on the right is Prospect Buildings. On the left is the Forum Cinema in a collection called Forum Buildings.

I think?

Echo team, here's an idea- how about a picture of somewhere other than High St/Above Bar/London Rd once in a while?

I'm not sure. Some of the buildings make me think of Southampton High Street but also look a little like Hanover Buildings.
Is it the corner of High Street and East Street? I haven't yet seen todays printed Echo by the way.

It's East Boldre. On the right is the New Inn (now the Turfcutters) just past Chrissy Martin's garage on the right. Up the road is Charlie Kitcher's coal yard next to Art Drodge's tin house

That's probably Willy Rickman driving the bus. It's the route through Pilley ending at the Boldre WM Club. Wilf Drodge would have been in there with his Horse. Pilley (AKA Drodge City)

Isn't that 'The Fifty shilling Tailors' on the near left. If so then the picture is looking up Above Bar from the New Road junction.
