ANOTHER small piece of Winchester heritage has been saved and returned to its rightful place.

Last summer Sustrans ranger Eric Reed discovered an original milepost from the Didcot Newbury and Southampton Railway alongside the Itchen Navigation path between Garnier Road and St Catherine’s Lock, St Cross.

He presumed it was disturbed by the contractors working on the new path.

Daily Echo:

After some research (notably into whether there was a buried cable or gas pipe) it was finally planted last month.

The team of Sustrans rangers was Eric, John Griffiths, Bruce Kettle and Paul Hamilton. Bruce and Paul are also Friends of Hockley Viaduct.

The post denotes 26 and one quarter miles from Newbury.

Friends of Hockley viaduct supplied the concrete.
